    Won't Try That Again

Too busy to refuel when the orange light came on yesterday.
Too busy to stop for fuel this morning. 5km left on the display. 9km from petrol station said my RNS510.

So with zero range on the display I prayed and feathered the throttle. Nudged the car just into D7 and checked the sat nav...2.7km to go. Turned air con off...save power.

Praying the traffic lights stayed green. They did. Up a hill to the station, thinking well I can probably push from here if it dies, round the corner and in. Wing and a prayer.

    I made it.

But I won't try that again.

yeah they have a bit of fuel left even when it says 0. When we PD new cars majority of them say 0klms left. WE still drive bout 5klm to servo. Only had 2 run out of fuel so far.

I managed to drive a Mk6 Golf (hire car) for about 15km after the DTE hit zero. That was scary! Not helped by being on single lane country roads in England. It took just over 53L of fuel to fill.

good to know that even though it says zero it's still got a bit of leeway. (for emergency situations such as yours)

i would've had a panic attack if that happened.

The thing about the fuel reserve is that as soon as you get in that zone, you should start looking to put some fuel in. I took my Caddy down to just on the start of the red area of the fuel gauge and took on just under 55 litres (full tank is 60 litres). This ties in with what the manual refers to as the reserve of 5 litres, so I know that when I get into the red area, time to put some fuel in.

On the estimated range, it is only an estimate and it does not mean that you will be able to pick up all the fuel that the system believes is in the tank. Your car might do that, but it might not, and could leave you in an awkward position.

Hmmm, I'm thinking if you buy a car and can't afford to keep it from running out of fuel or if you let it run almost dry then don't own it!
Before mine even touches the red I'll fill it....... I've had one bad experience when I was younger and I'll never do that again... not to mention that I'd hate to think what lurks on the bottom of a fuel tank that risks getting sucked into your fuel filter.

Only did it once in my Golf GTI (a few years back) as I was late for a meeting but there was a little trill and "adventure" to it.
I can totally relate to 77kw polo TSi - quick into 6th gear, neutral when going down hill, pray when idle in traffic, 100m to go .....
Live and let live, I say.

I saw a golf that had run out of fuel last week. DTE said 15km.
