The overall diameter of a wheel and tyre may not be increased by more than 15mm in most states in Australia

I see you are in Scotland so you should go to your local authority and ask them as we can only give opinions based on our countries laws.

My speedo is fast by 7kph at 100kph and to correct it would take a 40mm increase in diameter which would be very illegal

I always thought it 2" bigger. if your car came with 17's, legally you can chuck on 19's. could be wrong though

Read what I said about mine at 40mm being too large.

You can put larger rims but may need to put rubber bands instead of tyres to keep overall diameter legal

This from another forum as QLD website is all changed and prev posed links dont work

    Qld Transport says:
The rim diameter may be varied from the standard sizebut the overall diameter of the tyre must not vary by more than +15mm or -26mm.

And the National Code of practice for construction and modification of light vehicles states:

Here are each East Coast States rules Qld link doesnt work but the above is the rule

Long story short: 18" rims ET30, 8,5J front and 9J rear with 215/35/18 tires are the largest you can fit

No need to get technical with laws

On a GTI maybe and are actually 2 mm oversize according to the latest Polo brochure wheel size. Splitting hairs maybe but

OP is in Scotland and doesnt say what model he has Will be too big for a 77TSi which only has 15 in rims
