I've changed my BT module via a VCDS cable so it'd stop complaining that the touch screen unit was missing. My iPhone connects via BT for the phone and MDI for music and sits in my glovebox
Have you just left the empty touchscreen cradle on show ReaderrOr?
Its great that you have your own VCDS to be able to do this, the touchscreen irks me daily

Yeah it's on show, but you don't notice it at all really. I am pondering about getting the cradle though, because I can't see SMSs with the iPhone being in the glovebox. But then you can't look through playlists and stuff via the MDI, decisions decisions...

It's a great replacement idea....but I want to minimize the look and iPhone cradle looks quiet large going on pics posted on here IMO?
Could probably live with empty touch screen cradle....darn nuisance needing to deactivate the touchscreen first, if VAG had done this right to start with, or just not drilled through the dash, we may have been able to move the whole unit at least
    As you say, decisions....decisions

WA legislation makes it illegal to read SMS's or even have "previews" of SMS's visible on your phone while on a public road (wether stopped at traffic lights or driving, but legal pulled off to the side of the road)

So technically its illegal to have an iphone visible in a cradle unless all it is showing is sat-nav. BUT IF YOU GET A POPUP SMS IT SUDDENLY IS ILLEGAL!

What retard came up with this law seriously. I totally agree that mobile phones are a huge distraction - infact I see alot of people STILL using them up against their ear while in the car, but the level that these new laws take it to is just STUPID.

I have the BT touch module's screen set to auto-off after 15 (or so) seconds. As such, I don't notice it now when driving so it doesn't bother me that much anymore. Plus changing to the Highline theme makes the module look that slightly more classier

However, wholeheartedly agree that we should be able to opt-out of them installing this device on our GTIs.

How does this bluetooth work with multiple phones ?

I my old SSV it would store multiple devices in a priority list and connect to which ever device it could find and was highest on its priority list. Our XC60 remebers each device it has connected to, but stays connected to one device and requires you to manually change to a different device, even if it can't find the last connected device.

Is this Polo bluetooth any different to either of these? If I upgrade to the iPhone cradle is there a way to connect a different phone (Nokia) and have it set as the priority device (since its a work phone)?

if you have the 9w7 or 9wZ yes, you can assign priorities.

    Hi there David,

Just confirming, if the dock is installed in place of the touch screen, you do not have to have the phone docked for the Bluetooth connection to work. You can leave your phone in your pocket, briefcase, boot, wherever - and it will work just fine.

    Good luck!

If I replace the touchscreen with one of these iPhone Handyadapters, then my phone will work with the 9w7 via bluetooth even if the iPhone is still in my pocket - not in the cradle? (Gee - that'd make it just like the cheap BT handsfree I bought 9 years ago! Nice work VW)

I gather from my tests and reading here that the 9w7 won't work with an iPhone unless there's something else enabling it (either a 510 front end, or in the case of my car with 310 front end, it needs something plugged into the stupid cradle on the dashboard - and the iPhone adapter fulfils that role).
So I either get the VCDS cable and follow the instructions at the top of this thread, or I get the adapter from Germany/ebay. (or replace the 310 with a 510 front end)
Since I have that bracket stuck on the dash, I figure it would make an ok spot to sit my phone (which can then serve as my gps too.)
For short trips I'd rather not HAVE to put my phone in the cradle just to get it to connect to the 9w7, hence my question above.
    Thanks in advance.
    David.

Hi guys, after reading all the posts in this thread, I am still confused / I still have a few questions regarding my MY12.5 Polo GTI:

    1) So IS there a way to completely bypass (w/o removing the cradle from the dash) the Touch Adapter and have a phone connect over Bluetooth directly to the RCD510 / the unit under the driver's seat?

    2) Should one wish to remove the entire cradle from the dash; is there a part that can be replaced to get rid of the hole left behind?

    3) In the VW genuine, iPhone-specific cradle from Germany: do the two buttons on the bottom of the cradle work and what do they do?

    Thanks in advance guys!

Yep you can. On your phone, make sure you have unpaired the Touch Adaptor. Only have the 9w7/unit under the seat (aka VW PHONE) paired.
If you have your phone's bluetooth on before you start the car, it should automatically connect to your 9w7.
If you forgot to turn on the bluetooth prior to starting the car, you can manually connect using the MFD by:
Using the left/right buttons on the steering wheel, switch to the Bluetooth menu -> Scroll to "bluetooth" -> then "Users" -> then choose phone.

    Done
