In "S", the DSG will hold back changing gears until you basically slam into the rev limiter. The car is rated at (from memory here) topping out at 229kph with 6th and 7th both being over driven, 5th might be at 1:1. If I had the copy of motor where they compared around the track, the polo with clio and ciroen DS3, I could check what the in-gear speeds were.

Another thing is the FPV still runs a torque converter auto, so in regards to "tiptronic", I know when flicked over, it will hold gears but it's a different beast. So it's like comparing apples with pears, still from a similar family, but completely different too. I'm planning on heading to winton I think in november, will be interesting to see what the car is like on the track in regards to top speeds etc...

On my test drive, I remember hitting 150kph with ease in fourth in manual mode so without phisucally trying it in mine (for obvious reasons....) I can't tell you what the speed is at the rev limiter in fourth....

Even though his 'not-so-normal' FPV is only a 6 speed tiptronic I still wouldn't have the bottle to challenge it LOL!! He may get the last laugh me thinks.

I think you are spot on Gav. Maximum I could get it to was 5th gear (won't tell how fast I was going). I would imagine 6th and 7th would be for the 200Km/hr plus zone!!!

Cheers gavs. It was by no means revving out at 160 in 4th but I was kind of waiting for it to change up, which it never did.

yeah, it won't. When I first drove the Mk5 GTI golf with DSG, I was expecting the same thing. Then I drove the Ralliart Lancer with it's dual-clutch gearbox and it did the same thing. I was expecting to be like my first car, the commodore, when you pressed the "sport" button, all it did was hang onto the gear for another 1500-2000 rpm.

The reason for "S" mode in these gearboxes is so the computer controls the maximum performance/power delivery. In my mind, other than engine run in, "s" is pointless, that's what the manual setting is for
