Yeah the 77tsi appears the be the best all rounder and most reliable (especially when optioned with the manual) the GTI is a awesome car and a great price but after 3 years of its release its engine is still quite problematic (oil consumption wise anyway) the other thing is its DSG only, again still a little problematic.

If you can drive a manual the 77tsi is great, plenty of tourqe (could do with a tad more power but only if you were doing speeds over 100) the 77tsi DSG is quicker and delivers the power better but again still going through the teething phase.

The 66tdi is still a great car, but long runs are a must to keep the DPF in check.

Guess it really depends where your priorities sit.

GTI - extremely good performance at the cost of oil haha - new engines appear much better then first models

TDI - efficiency at the cost of premature DPF failure / poor running - if used mostly used in short start stop traffic

TSI - best all rounder for reliability (excluding DSG models)

I only mention DSG problems becuae I have had a few - but my 77tsi is a 2011 which is subject to the recall. New models built from now "should" be fixed as they are using new gearbox components (clutch and mechatronics) but only time will tell.

If potential gearbox problems are of concern I would suggest looking at VW cars fitted with the 6sp DSG's as they are wet clutch and after many years of working out the bugs, they are practically faultless.

Sat in the new Clio (not RS ofcourse) looks great, and interior is pretty nice inside. Sadly I could only really fit in the drivers seat (pass doesn't come with height adjust, even the top of the line one) and visibility was poor.

I also tried out the 3dr i30, its built in europe with a euro suspension setup and independent rear suspension (5dr is torsion). Really great car, but totally let down by its anaemic 1.6 98kW engine, a 77tsi would feel faster thanks to all that torque.

I could've got the i30 3dr for 19,990 drive away though! If they put the 1.6T in it things would've been interesting...

In fact, the economy and torque of the 77TSI is so good that you could argue that the TDI has no real use in the Polo range.
Thanks for that, off tomorrow shopping.

Love my 2013 build gti so far, nice to drive around in and plenty of grunt for when you want to work out some traffic frustrations. DSG can be a little worrisome in heavy start stop traffic only because I'm paranoid about looking after the clutches. If in heavy slow traffic for extended periods I tend to put it in manual mode and stop it from jumping into 2nd too early and slipping. It's no different in this respect to any other manual car though really, just needs a bit more attention than a torque converter auto.

After waiting for over three weeks I have some information for you Read.

    Direct from Wulfsberg Germany,

There will most likely be no "face lift" for the Polo 6R generation as there will be a newly designed / engineered VW Polo with the core concern to limit damage that has been caused to VW city car category, with a newly designed and tested DSG transmission.
My fears it will be another "dry" 7 speed though...I'm firmly leaning to Renault >.<

It will be a dry clutch becuase its better for weight and it's designed for small torque engines - kind of pointless putting in a clutch that can handle 400nm when the engine doesn't do over 150nm. Thing is if they say they are spending the time to fix the 7sp DSG instead if a face lift chances are they could fix it / or make it better.

The Renault is a 6sp dry clutch so that means 2 things - the dry clutch design can work but it needs to be designed properly by VW...or the Renault will suffer from the same problems as VW gearboxes.

    Only time will tell

There's nothing inherently wrong with dry clutches, almost every manual car has a dry clutch and nobody complains about their reliability. Whatever is/was wrong with the dq200 box is not that the clutch is dry but more to do with the friction material, clutch pack design andaautomatic control of the clutch. All of those things can be done right in which case you'd end up with a perfectly fine gearbox.

True conventional manuals are dry clutch but they also are much larger and thus handle more torque. There is also only 1 clutch creating heat instead of 2 wherein lies the problem.

The other thing is a human will adjust to the varying friction coefficient of the clutch unlike the DSG - which is why it will just slip and shudder past its predefined parameters.- obviously a software fix would improve this but really the clutches need to be kept at a constant temp to reduce heat spikes - this is why wet clutch boxes have much more consistent operation.
