I used to have a bumper protector in my imprezer wagon. Was like wetsuit material folded in half with som Velcro to hold it down in the boot. Then you just folded it out to cover the bumper. Surprised VW don't have any thing like this?

We need some thing that stows away!

To change the tail lights over from LHD to RHD, you have to:
- Remove the fog light lens
- Change over the wiring (or use the old tail light electrical panel) depending if you intend to sell or keep the old tail lights.
First up to remove the old tail lights from the car, undo the white bolts that hold them in. Located behind the carpet flaps in the back C pillars. They are quite hard to undo but they do unscrew just like normal screws (lefty loosey, righty tighty). Then pop out the tail light and undo the cable (there is 2 clips on the side of the plug holding it into the light)
Ok now for the new black tail lights. The foglight is on the wrong side, what this also means is that the reverse light is on the wrong side and thus neither work because the wiring is different. To fix this I just took the electrical panel off (held in by 4 clips) and literally ripped the red foglight lens out. Just some long nose pliers will do fine. Once you rip that out your almost there.
Now you have to make a decision:
Do you want to keep the original tail lights intact to sell?
Or are you adventurous and want to change wiring?
If you don't intend to keep the taillights and are selling them you will have to change the wiring. Trust me its not as bad as it sounds. All you have to do is:
Look at the connector on both Sides you will see the
left has:
5 pins and a space.
right has:
4 pins, a space and then 1 pin
What you have to do is move the end 2 pins so that they look like this
Left side:
4 pins, a space and then 1 pin
Right side:
5 pins and then a space.
In other words just swapping both sides around. Left goes to right and vice versa. A small flathead screwdriver is all that is required to remove the pins from the plastic socket and move it over.
If you don't intend to sell the tail lights all you have to do is move the electrical panel over from the old lights an put them on the new one but make sure you move the red brake bulbs over.
This is because the original red tail lights use a clear bulb and a red lens where the black tail lights use a red bulb and a clear lens, meaning the only thing giving the red effect is the bulbs themselves.
What about the foglight you ask? If you feel it is important to have a rear foglight you can go out and buy a red bulb (same as the stop light) and put it in its place on the driver side.
Hope it helps. I would post pictures but am occupied elsewhere for the duration and an iPhone is already a difficult device to use for this kind of stuff.
Nomad, your the absolute greatest!!!
I will give it a go once the lights are delivered. Now another question.. Where to buy them from?
I have found that you bought yours through Kufatec.
Original VW Rear Lights Black - VW Polo 6R-39143
The description of these states they are the black tail lights but they look clear in the pictures.
Are these the correct ones?
The other link is the eBay link:
http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com.au/vi...id=79129968002
These look like the black/smoked ones but they are a little more expensive than the Kufatec ones.
If they are the same ill purchase through Kufatec.
I intend to keep the original lights so I intend to do the install without damaging the originals.
I noticed you live in Wantirna, I'm in Rowville. Once done, we should go for a little cruise
Both the ones from kufatec and tuning fanatics shop are the exact same the only difference is the way they have taken the photo that's it which makes the later look darker. The background of the tail lights are gloss black and the outside cover is transparent.
Get it from kufatec, when you purchase them it will take off the 19% VAT because you are purchasing them outside of the European Union which saves a bit of money compared to eBay. Also the service and speed of the postage is way WAY better.
I'm definitely up for a cruse any time, if you need any help installing just let me know.
Thanks again. I'll get the from Kufatec
Just one last question; you mentioned that the black lights use clear lenses for both reverse and fog lights and the only thing giving the fog a red color is the bulb. If that is the case then why do I need to remove the fog light lens (paragraph 2 of your description)?
I would have thought that just replacing the red bulb in the LHS black light with a clear bulb would act the same as reverse light because the lens is clear..
The whole headlight has a clear lens outside but there is a red plastic Lens inside the headlight for the foglight because it has a clear bulb.
It's the same setup as your current tail lights. Look at your red lights, they have a red lens on the outside but if you look at the indicator and reverse/foglight the plastic that covers it is clear. The indicator bulb is painted orange and the reverse/foglight are clear bulbs. The foglight then has a red plastic lens covering the clear bulb.
What I said is if you want to keep your foglight functionality you will have to replace the clear foglight bulb with a red bulb because the plastic red lens that sits in front of the clear foglight bulb to give red light will be ripped out.
Ahh ok got it. Thanks again
I didn't realize there was an inner lens cover.
I guess it'll help if I look at my original lights but ill wait till the black ones come in.
Pm me whenever I'm always up for a cruze too
if you want your taillights to be darker, why not just tint them, seems like a lot of effort to buy new taillights just for that purpose.
