There are two trains of thought on that one.
During my time at an automotive manufacturer leaving the car in gear was a formal warning event so as to prevent damage to other cars. However on many mine sites not leaving the car in gear will get you escorted off site (thier thinking is a car in gear and turned off is very unlikely to move with nobody in it).
Personally I don't leave cars in gear. Hang up from my manufacturing days..
But getting back on topic my wife insists on using the climate control as a refigeration unit. When she gets in the car imediately turns it down to coldest then up then down. And then whinges that the climate control dosen't keep the air at a comfortable temp.
