Waterpump and Manual Box

The last couple of months i've been experiencing crunching in 2nd gear and an extremely knotchy third gear.

Also i've noticed my coolant level has been slowly dropping.

Turns out after an inspection at VW workshop the syncro's in my Manual Gearbox are faulty and my waterpump needs replacing after leaking coolant onto one of the bottom plastic pans and evaporating from the heat of my engine...

He was surprised to hear that my waterpump makes quite a loud whining noise when it's under load, I totally thought that was normal.

Extremely impressed with Alto VW's service in Blacktown. They're onto it.

Anybody else had these sort of issues, or is this just an isolated incident?

My Polo has 2,000km on it and so far nothing wrong at all.
My Mk5 Golf has currently got the crunching in 2nd every so often though but no water pump issues. 165,000km on the clock so might be the clutch...
Both cars are manual.

I'm in Melbourne so no chance of getting my car into Alto VW but my local can inspect and hopefully come back to me with a fix that's not too expensive. *fingers crossed*

My Polo has just under 58,000km on it, just a tad more than yours, but a little bit less than your Golf!

I never posted a resolution to this and I feel I need to now after finding it again.

My gearbox was replaced after finding shavings all through it and a snapped syncro. When they put it all back together, they couldn't work out why it was shuddering so bad, so they replaced my clutch aswell under warranty.

My waterpump was leaking through one of the bottom seals, coolant was leaking to one of the bottom wind deflector guards and evaporating, so it was hard to find, the white spots were quite evident when the deflector was removed. The entire unit was replaced.. Which still whines when it is under load (after operating temperate has been met and the system starts working to full potential..) at least it holds the coolant now though! Curious to know if anyone else here has a high pitch whine when the car is warm and idling?
