    warranty question...

A/C on GTI broke down and when i took it to my regular VW service (not dealer) they found a blown fuse, which they replaced. After driving away that afternoon, within a couple of k's, exact same thing...dead.

Garage charged me $50 and when i asked, should this not be covered under WTY? He said, well, you've done some wiring...(which refers to stereo and s/w install which was done by reputable installer some months ago...) and when i rang him back to say it broke down again, he said to bring it back, they will need to have a longer look at. Apparently no fault codes showed up.

My question is, can only dealers perform wty work and, as such, i should take it to local dealer...

    or...

just go back and let them have another look. I have another car, so can leave it there for a few days if required.

    thanks in advance

As I understand it, only authorised dealers can submit a claim for warranty work to the manufacturer.

Obviously, it also means your local mechanic would not be reimbursed by VW for his troubles, so the work that he hasn't charged you for is coming out of his own pocket.

Any work done on the vehicle by a third-party is covered by their warranty (if any) and not the manufacturer.

This is my understanding as well.
Warranty work can only be carried out by an authorised dealership.

Having said that if it is an electrical fault and you have installed a sound system which can be linked to the potential of causing an electrical fault so it's really up to the dealer if they want to play ball with you unfortunately.

turns out the fanblower is drawing too much current...and keeps blowing fuses.

    a mere $650 to replace...if it's not under wty...which they didn't realise mine was.
and...is not considered a critical claim...so by truck from Sydney, 5-6 days...

only when I said it was critical for me up in FNQ, as with the wet season no sane person wld drive without a/c and that I considered it a safety risk, did they indicate they would try to escalate the issue...

lucky i still have the Tig to drive around.

    tks for your help Diesel_vert & team_v!

    Holy hell.
At least they have narrowed it down for you.

I agree that it would be an issue for FNQ.

    Hopefully they play ball.
