Vw polo 77 tsi making engine rattling noise on a cold start

    Hi there,

i recently bought a Vw polo 77 tsi, 2012 model, 1.2 turbo. I noticed a rattling noise coming from the engine when I start the engine in the morning. The noise goes away after 60 seconds when the rpm settles.

i don’t hear this noise afterwards unless I park the car for 4-5 hours during the day. Then when I start the engine again the noise will come back but it doesn’t last as long as in the morning.

has anyone has this problem before.

    regards,

    Eddy

Common characteristics of some VW engines. I wouldn't worry.

I'd be getting ready to do the timing chain, tensioner, and guides.

If it's rattling for around a minute, you're only causing more wear on the guides and chain, and the chain will eventually slip and trash the valves in the head.

It's caused by the tensioner bleeding down after it's been shut-off.

Sorry, I miss read the original post.. didn't realise it was lasting up to a minute.

Umai, is a small 1 second rattle still cause for concern?

    Generally, no.

In my opinion, around a minute is when you should start looking at getting it fixed.

    Hey Gooday,

Yeah, my take on those noises is the Timing Chain tensioner. I had one cause some noise during waranty, was replaced without too much fuss. Started to go again 30,000km later.

I think you should get it checked out. Its one of those parts that if it goes, everything dies.
