Well there have been reports that Golf R and Polo GTi production will be on hold until after Jan 2011, so that makes sense with what your mum-in-law was told.
So get this. The reps for VGA called my mum-in-law this week (she ordered a GTI 2 weeks before me) and told her that her car was going to now be pushed out to Feb / Mar 2012 (supposed to be Dec) because 'left hand drive' cars are easier to make and they are putting 'right hand drive' cars on hold!!! WTF?
There's just no consistency to their excuses these days......

Cancel the orders. By the time people get their Polos there will be a whole suite of new cars on the market.
It is so weird how we have to deal with these delays over here.
My dad is in Dubai and you just walk to the dealership and they have all the cars in stock sitting there ready to go whatever spec you want
OMG? How do they fit 100,000 cars in the dealership?
Thats true. The Skoda Fabia vRS and Opel Astra GTC will be here in Q1 2012. But I wouldn't be surprised if people who actually ordered the cars when they 'launch' don't get them until August or so. The normal Fabia was meant to arrive in July but now its more like October

If my car is any later than February i fear the poor V6 in my Aurion will explode under the aggression of my right foot...
It won't explode, it just will run you through a re light and kill you and all of your family, then toyota will buy off the government so as the congressional inquiry finds that toyota aren't at fault even though ther is documented evidence that they are..... Oh wait, this is starting to sound familiar....

Also it seems like, the average forum reader would be able to track the cars better than the "VW Customer Care for Polo GTI". I've run them a couple of times over the last 2 weeks to find out what sort of information they would give about the car. Once was before the car popped up on the tracking site and once after.
Both times they were unable to tell me anything alot of uhmmms on the other side of the telephone followed by, its possibly still on the train to the dock or the docks... when in fact I know the car is a few hours out of Southampton...
So don't count on them to give very accurate updates, the best thing they or your dealer can give you is the VIN and then do the rest yourself.
Regards
when does the VIN become available? Is this after it ships from the factory?
