Uneven wear on tyres

Hey folks,

I am looking at a new set of tyres for the GTI (any recommendations would be great) and popped into my local jax for a look at what was on offer yesterday. While we we discussing tyre options the bloke noticed that I had some uneven wear/flat spots on the rear tyres. He informed me that I should head to pedders or somewhere similar and have a written report done up to take to the VW dealership on the grounds that the rear shocks may be faulty/under-performing.

I was just wondering if anybody has any thoughts, or has experienced this with the standard suspension in the GTI?

But seriously I have had a similar problem but with feathering on the outside of the tyres (all wheels, worse in front)

I fixed it (well it's better at least) by raising the air pressure from 230kpa (32psi) to 250kpa (36psi) so that it would put more pressure on the centre of the tyre. Maybe try letting some air out, yours could be too high.

I found that the tyre placard isn't very accurate. Both the GTI and 77tsi w/sports pack have 215/40r17 87w spec wheels yet the 77tsi recommends a max of 240kpa (34psi) and the GTI is about 39psi from what I have heard. Now considering both cars have a similar mass it makes you wonder...

Bridgestone Potenza 215/45 r17 RE002, got them from Jax @ $196 a corner, on the advice from gavs here, very happy with the tyres

Different springs, different dampers. Different expectations as to how the car would be driven & what ride quality the driver would expect.

+1 on that, myself and Gavs got them the same week I believe during the Bridgestone buy 3 get 1 free period.

After several months the ride is nothing but solid, great grip in the wet, solid grip under heavy lateral load into corners / deep hilly bends.

Cons?

I wish I could have a full spare set sitting in a cupboard (as you do with shoes)

Yeah was looking at some re002, that and a set of continental gt's but the conti' were around $240 per tyre.

Yes the tyres on there currently are Dunlop sport maxx's, rubbish from the beginning in my opinion

DSMs are the king of flat spotting. I'd suggest the only issue with your vehicle is the tyres.

About 2/3 down the first page of messages you will see uneven wear on my Dunlop SP Sport 01 tyres. Dunlop have all the excuses, and VW wash their hands of it even though they fitted these when I bought the vehicle new.

The problem for me is that my Caddy Maxi Life requires 94H tyres according to the tyre placard, while the Caddy Maxi (Van) requires only 91H tyres despite having a higher kerb weight + payload. I tried contacting VW Australia, but nothing has changed; they still ignore their customers.

It's just that there is a bigger range of 91H tyres compared to 94H tyres.
