    Turbo Cool Down Period

    Hi All,

    Now i know there is probably something in here about this but for the life of me i can't find it.

    On the weekend i installed a turbo timer on a mates EVO and got me thinking about my Polo GTi. I started looking around to see if i could find any information and i've seen a lot of the Golf boys talking about a standard pump that after switching the engine off feeds fluid into the turbo to help keep it healthy.

    Now i often leave the car running for a few minutes after a spirited drive regardless, but i'm just keen to know if our 6R GTi's have this?

    If anyone can provide a link or shed some light on this, that would be great thank you.

    Hi - my brothers 2007 Polo GTI did this so im sure the new ones would as well. The electric water pump runs and flows water through the motor/turbo to cool it down after switching the engine off.

    Youve certainly got the right mindset with letting the turbo cool after a hard run, but in that situation i generally drive sedately for the last minute or two before stopping, then let it idle for 30 seconds before i shut off.

    With general commuting etc it isnt necessary. Most of the time if you are parking etc the engine has already been idling long enough to just shut the engine off straight away.

    This is my 3rd turbocharged performance car over about a 10yr period, and i have done the same thing with all of them and never had an issue.

    Hey thanks man, I thought that was the case because I do hear an electric pump working when I turn it off from time to time.

    Yeah I'm on my 2nd turbo car and I'm quite anal, so I've been doing that for ages lol

    Yes these modern cars have plenty of tricks up their sleeve. Im hearing you about being anal with my cars - sounds like we are the same.

    I had turbo timers in both my other cars and had them set to 1 minute, but if i didnt feel it was necessary to let them run down, i would press the "off" button to over ride the turbo timer and shut the car off manually.

    One of my friends lets his Toyota Supra run down for about 5-10minutes, even after an easy drive, and its both a waste of time/petrol and totally unnecessary. Theres a fine line between allowing the turbo to cool for a period of time and then prolonged excessive idling which heats the turbo back up!!

    Good use to let the engine run for about one minute after an hard driving...

    Anyway the electric pump still works for 15min after engine off:

    Yeah 1 minute is plenty for me because I drive softly for the last few minutes before my destination.

    Thanks kawabanga, this is what I was looking for. Can I ask where u got this info?

    Yes the 77tsi has the same water pump feature, i hear it for about 5 mins after turning engine off, but also let it idle for a min after a decent drive.

    Here's the link, actually is related to the 1.4TSI 160hp mounted on Golf 5, but no big differences with our engine...
