    Towbar on Polo GTI?

    Hi,

Has anyone had the VW or another towbar/bike carrier installed on a gti? Is it removable? Any photos? Do the skirts need to be cut?

Tried strap on carriers, but too difficult with the roof spoiler

Love to see photos - info from vw site is pretty limited!

    Cheers,
    Scott

I'm not 100% but I was flicking through the manual or possibly on their website and I don't believe VW recommend towing/fitting towbar with the GTI.. possibly why there is no info about fitting anything on it. You'd probably have to search an aftermarket supplier to custom fit something for you.

It's likely VAG didn't intend the GTi to be fitted with a towbar and have not gone through the process of getting approval for the provision of one to be fitted. This was the case I had with a Ford Focus (XR5/ST variant). With some minor modification to the rear diffuser/exhaust hangers a standard Focus tow bar could be fitted.
With the Polo GTi you might find that the exhaust system will prevent the fitting of standard Polo towbar, so you might have to go custom.

Quoted $1600 from the dealer for the VW towbar. wow.
After-market might be worth looking at.... or at these prices, just riding near home!

They also suggested roof racks for $400, plus $250 per bike carrier, but sounds fiddley, and like a recipe for damage to the paintwork! Oh well....

You will need to hack your rear bumper considerably, the rear bumper is bigger and deeper than the standard bumper. I have seen a local GTI with a tow bar on it but it didn't look crash hot. You can't look at the Thule catalogue to look for roof mounted stuff?
