hey guys , im new around here , my wife and I are looking at one of these althought I have been doing some research and have been a bit scared off with the reviews I have read of vw cars in general.

does anyone own one of these and can enlighten me on real world issues etc rather then a car salesmen tell me every thing I wanna hear

Ive got 3, two dsg, one manual, all tdi... I own a driving school, we've had suzuki, toyota, honda and these are the best small cars ive ever owned, one dsg has 120k, manual 90k and new dsg 3k, great little cars, good on fuel. Quality leaves competitors for dead.

VW sales and VW assist not that great, but service has been 2nd to none. I did have the dsg issue, new gearbox was replaced under warranty. That aside i wouldnt buy another car.

All new cars have issues from time to time, and despite the media, ive found the service side very good and competitive in price to all other makes...

My cars get driven by absolute beginners to 17 year olds doing driving tests, although well maintained they get a hard time. And after two years all other makes weve used felt old and tired. The two 2011 polos feel just run in...

We own a 2011 manual TDI that's clocked 68,880 kms. At 30,000 kms the front brakes started shuddering and had to be replaced out of warranty because VW didn't want to know about it. It's likely that was caused by the brakes getting too hot and then pad material sticking to the disc.

The EGR valve needed replacing around 25,000 kms because it failed. It was replaced under warranty and hasn't failed again since it was replaced.

Some rats decided it would be fun to eat some of the vacuum hoses in the engine bay so that was $300 in parts and $200 in labour on top of the $600 for the 60,000 kms service.

A week ago VW replaced all four injectors under warranty because they were on their way to "catastrophic failure" and had been causing some strange engine behaviour for a while (stalling in neutral, loud knocking noises, no power etc.)

When it's working, it's a great little car with plenty of torque and a great gearbox. The only problem is that it seems to spend a lot of its time not working...

If you are even contemplating the option of tuning the engine in one of these, i highly recommend you don't. These engines are built pretty much on the threshold of what they can handle already, i have seen translated reports of tuners that have ended up with customers bringing back engines in multiple little boxes. If you want to keep it stock, aside from the generic rattles and eventual DSG clutch issues I would have bought one over the GTI in a heartbeat if I had my time again.

thanks a lot for the input guys , im really torn because I really think they are the best looking hatch out at the moment but I just want something reliable for my wife to drive every day.... even my mechanic told me to stay clear

im in no rush to buy at the moment so who knows what will happen , but once again thanks

Haha I can see where your coming from mate and reliability is important but I tell you despite the issues I have with my car the ONLY reason I keep it and love it is becuase when I put my foot down and my face gets smashed into the seat I always smile. If it wasn't for that it would be the same as a yaris. Slow and boring - just less reliable.

It depends on your priorities, for me its performance and price, something the VW's cannot be beaten at.

Even with the dsg failure, these cars have been just as reliable as any jap car ive owned, and they get a flogging, by novice drivers and me in between...

Get a new mechanic, problem solved...
