Hi,

I know you guys are probably as sick of my noise posts as I am but, but unfortunately I have yet another question. I had just turned off the freeway late last night (after about 25 minutes at a sustained 110 kmh) and was stopped at a set of traffic lights with only one other car ahead of me (and nothing at all behind me). I heard a noise that sounded like an excavator doing road works only metres from my car - the loud humming noise you hear from a road working implement about 20 metres away when your windows are all closed. But as there were no roadworks going on I then assumed the lone car ahead of me had a serious problem and the noise would go away when the car ahead departed.

So the lights go green and with no one behind me I let the car ahead go and I move off really slowly, allowing it to get away from me. The noise was still there! I pulled into a side street, got out and realised the Polo was responsible for all the noise. Seemed to be coming from the rear of the car underneath the floor pan so I am assuming it is possibly something to do with the fuel tank feeder pump, as I don't know anything else back there that would make that sort of noise.

Managed to get the car back home and it was still making it (but not as loud as it was when it had just gotten off the freeway).

Now I know some will accuse me of imagining this sound given my other sound posts, but I promise I am not - I have never heard a sound like this from the Polo before. If I had I surely would have reported it before as it was quite alarming.

Has this happened to anyone before? If so, is it some temporary glitch or is there a simple explanation for it?
