Okay so I woke up yesterday, missed my sleep in and was like well what the hell happened...

Really? How the hell did that happen? Im still not sure. Yes, I got me a Polo Gti, a black 5 door to be exact!

Sure it doesn't have the fake leather seats or bi xeons that I wanted but it is and has everything else that I wanted. I ended up with the audio upgrade, MDI and comfort pack.

Firstly, I'd like to say thanks to the dude that ordered this long ago and then cancelling it! (and for almost having my exact taste

So with this joyful event, I have some questions, looking for factual based answers (if possible)!


Question 1. Fuel type?

Should I use 95 or 98, I know 98 is meant to be better, but FOR the Polo, will it make a difference from 95 - other then my wallet?

Question 2. Run it in?

Should I baby this thing until x kms? Should I hammer it until x kms? Or just be normal from the get go? I know there is a lot of talk about this (but again looking for factual answers). Is this train of thought only required for old cars, some new cars - is it even relevant to the Polo?

Question 3. Should I get the paint protection ($800 WV) / if yes, from VW or a third party? It sounds good but really? As good as they say? $800 bucks? Really?

Question 4. Window tint?

Any particular type of tint? I want something really dark. Jumped online and apparently there are six million types to choose from. What should I be spending on this? VW will do it for $500. I thought it started from about $300. Any recommendations? finishes / technologies it should include?


Sorry for all the questions, but I might as well ask people that have a clue and aren't in it for the commission!

98+RON. Period.

Drive it like you stole it.

Paint protection will be from a 3rd party....but should be honoured by a guarantee. Depends on who is doing it and what they do. Some are definitely worthwhile, others...well, just wasting money.

Darker the better. Choice is entirely yours.

1. Always use 98 octane fuel. There's a bit of contention out there about which is best, although the general consensus is that BP Ultimate or Shell V-Power is the way to go.

2. Pretty much the same answer as before. There's different schools of thought but from what I've read the best idea is to drive it fairly hard for the first 1500km. Don't go crazy and keep a close eye on the oil level as it tends to chew through a fair bit. Driving it hard from new seems to lessen the amount of oil used when the engine gets a bit older.

3. Your choice. If you're a DIY type person, visit Carcare Products. You can pick up some top quality Nanolex paint sealant for under $100. They're also a brilliant site for shampoos and waxes etc.

4. Your best bet would probably go to a big name tinting place that offers a good warranty and quality workmanship. I can't really speak as I got mine through the dealer, but I've heard great things about Tint-a-Car. Of course it depends on the individual franchisee.

I hope that some of this info is new to you and that you enjoy your GTI. I love mine more and more every time I drive it.

I've also read where you should wait until Oil Temp is @ 92C before hammering it.

Fastest way to do that is drive it quietly for a few kms, then stop and switch off. Start again after about 5 minutes 9or so). Temp will rise much quicker.

Drove a 6R GTI the other day, 2km to servo, stop/shut off/refuel then about 2 km to the destination. Oil Temp was at 75C when I arrived at destination.

Would it be better to place it on a dyno to wear it in, make sure its done as well as it can be?

Even though I have a 77 TSI (not the GTI) here are my 2 cents worth.

1. Fuel definately 98 (I needed fuel last week and the station I went to was out of 98 so I used 95, it is running really rough)

2. Run it in with vigour once the engine is warmed up.

3. 3rd party or DIY otherwise I think it is a bit of deler rip off.

4. There is a thread in the golf forum with all the details on tinting, definately not through the dealer though, just find someone reputable.
