Smallest wheels and widest tires to fit Polo GTI 6R

    Hi there,

What would be the smallest wheel diameter and widest tires I could fit into Polo GTI 6R.

    Thanks

You could fit smaller brakes, fit 12"x10" ET10 rims, and some 295/45/12 tyres (assuming they make tyres that size).

It'd look pretty dope, but likely not be roadworthy

16 inch if you're lucky, something like the mk4 golf GTI might fit diameter wise. If you wanted I'm sure you could make a 235 tyre fit easily enough...

    Assuming the OE fitment is 215/40 R17 87V XL tyres on 7.0 J x 17 ET 46 wheels, then...

    255/45 R15 93V tyres on 8.0 J x 15 wheels.

I think that's the smallest and widest the roadworthiness regulations allow you to go, in regards to permitted tyre and wheel combinations.

But keep in mind that fitting such a combination on your vehicle may breach other regulations (e.g. tyre & wheel must not protrude beyond the body, etc).

Front brake disc diameter on a Polo GTI is 288 mm.

GTI/TDI is 288mm front, TSI is 256mm front (same as the Mk4). So with TSI brakes, you could fit anything that fits a Mk4 Golf

To the OP - if you're serious, do some research & find a pic of a GTI w/ the style/size/shape rims & tyres you want, and find out what size they are - easier than asking randomly

Since the 9N3 GTi has the same brake setup as the 6R GTi, you should be able to fit 15" rims since some 9N3 GTi owners have done this. And from memory, Gambit was able to get 15" rims to clear the brakes on his 6R GTi a while back (I don't think he ever ran them, though).

Good call, Dylan - I've seen less helpful posts (than the one you were referring to) but only just.

The 1" additional width limit over OEM is a NSW thing. The OP is in Vic so he can get any width rim that will fit within the guards (and has an offset down to 13mm less than the stock rims since the 1" track increase limit is nationwide).

Okay, assuming no limit to rim width, then:

    285/40 R15 92V on 11.0 J x 15 wheels (or 10.5 J / 10.0 J / 9.5 J).

But fitting that on a 6R Polo may not be entirely practical.

Fitting smaller wheels would be counter productive as it would put the speedo further out than it already is. (Usually 7kph at 100kph)

So if you go smaller it will be even worse. Would also lower the gearing so it would rev like crazy a lot earlier Would cut the underbody clearance as well

I think the legal limit is 26mm smaller overall diameter in all states.

Have a look at this for the effects of different sized wheels

If he went for smaller rims, then he'd get taller tyres (through a profile and/or width change) to maintain the rolling diameter.

Should have added that the offset almost cannot be greater than OE (ie no track decrease). With that and the guards limitation, I think you're safe in assuming that the megawide wheels and tyres would not be practical.
