    Should we sell a MY13 GTI and get a MY16 Polo?

    Earlier this year we bought a MY13 GTI with the CTHE engine with just over 23,000k's.
    Its just been in for a 1,000k oil test and used 300ml's, and it had previously been using an average of 700ml's doing a rough calculations. Based on the mileage we bought it at and what we had put in.
    Ive asked the service receptionist to check if the technician has looked for other reasons apart from "they all do that its normal"
    I did tell them in writing it was blowing blue smoke at high revs when the turbo is working hard and seemed to lack power.
    symptoms to me of blown turbo seals.

    So back to the question should we get rid of it?
    Pro's everything apart from the engine troubles. Size, handling, general build quality, comfort.

    If it was me, I would upgrade. There's nothing worse than having the car with constant issues.

    "they all do it, its normal" is the ultimate cop out. I have a MY10 Mk6 GTI and my car would be lucky to use 300ml of oil in 5,000km.

    From MY12 onwards, most of the common issues with the Mk6 GTi engine have been fixed (revised parts for the timing chain tensioner, water pump etc which are all common failure items). Apart from this the Mk6 GTI engine is generally a good, strong and reliable engine.

    The new Polo now finally has a decent engine (thank god they threw that crap 1.4 twincharge in the bin finally) and the option of a manual gearbox. But its a full size smaller than the Golf - can you live with the reduced space inside for passengers and the boot?

    Yes - having a new car is nice, but the reviews i've seen on the Polo GTI aren't that great, and for me its too tall and skinny and the wider Golf looks much nicer on the road.

    I've just got the figures back and a new GTI would be $17,800 plus our car, a comfort line would be $7,000 plus car.
    value of ours is $16,000 a drop of $7,000 in a few months.
    our long term plan was to keep it until my father in law stops driving and take over his golf Convertible which he got new last year. Same basic engine though and doesn't use a drop of oil.

    Maybe I should look into getting it tuned to cure the issues. What would that cost?

    Surely a MY13 is worth more than $16k, especially with such low km's. I'll be selling mine in the next 12 months if things go to plan and mines MY10 with 80,000km on it and ill be wanting $20k ish for it. Sell it privately or the dealer will rape you on price.

    Golf cabriolet have the 1.4L twincharge engine don't they.....if so id run in the opposite direction. Run even faster if its got the 7 speed DSG.

    Getting the engine tuned won't fix anything - you need to fix the root cause. Have you tried a thicker oil (5w-40 Penrite Enviro+) to see if that helps (many have reported that it does help slow down the oil use). Otherwise you may need new pistons/piston rings which a work colleague needed in her Audi a few years back (same engine as the GTI) as her engine used more oil than it did petrol.

    Another thing to try is this oil stabiliser from Liqui-Moly. A few people have reported that this also does help reduce/stop oil consumption. Might be worth a try Liqui Moly Viscoplus FOR OIL 300ml German Technology Visco Plus 8958 | eBay

    I as also getting $2.200 off the GTI as well. So it worked out at close to $18,500 discount & trade in combined.

    Am nervous long term about the golf but so far nearly 7,000k's and no oil useage.

    Thicker oil is a possibility. My father in law topped it up with 15/40 by mistake when they ran out in Sydney and that seemed to help.
    My wife picked it up this evening from Cardiff and they said they had talked to me so didn't need to tell her anything!

    Maybe be I should wait till the warranty expires and rebuild it my self. At least then I'd know it was done properly!

    think you are mixed up between my13 polo gti value and your golf gti.

    My apologies - you are right....i assumed he was looking to trade a MY13 Golf GTI.

    In that case, trade it and run. That engine (1.4 twincharge) and DSG gearbox are ticking time bombs. Grab the face lifted version with the 1.8T engine and manual gearbox.
