Mission accomplished! 9W7 installed. All the good work of our fellow members made it easier than I imagined. Got away with some cuts but that is all. Thought I would add my 2 cents worth as I felt more confident the more I read. So, I did the following with my install:

    1. 9W7 module had its "feet" cut off. Yup, there was no way it would get in behind the A/C controls with them. When I started sawing, the re was no turning back.
    2. There was actually a lot of stuff to get into that cavity and at some stage I was tempted to place it under the drivers seat but I sawed off the feet. The kilometre of cable was really hard to fit but I tucked it towards the back right. And the adaptor added more cable to the equation. It all fitted in the end with a squash and a squeeze!
    3. I wrapped the 9W7 unit in foam wrap. The stuff you get around flat pack furniture as insurance for rattles.
    4. The mic cable was pulled threw the whole on the right into the area below the steering column then secured under the fuse box as it ran towards the "A" pillar on the right.
    5. Going up the "A" pillar was easy as I just pulled at it as previously posted and it came off. I only took the cable length I needed up the pillar. The remainder I left at the bottom of the "A" pillar which I secured once all was connect to a point behind the dash. As mentioned by many other post, there was no airbag in sight. This one must have been specially designed by David Copperfield for VW - a brilliant illusion.
    6. For the cabin light, I decide to remove the curved part first by using my trim remover (ie old credit card) and then removed the light cluster by accessing the securing clips from inside the cavity.
    7. The mic had a choice of left or right. I chose right of course. There was a piece of plastic which had to be cut at a few points, similar to removing your mobile sim card from its larger credit card size card. The mic clipped into place nicely.
    8. Now, getting the cable from the top of the "A" pillar to the mic was a bit tricky. I attempted to put a coat hanger from the light across to the "A" pillar to attach the cable but it just could not get there. So I inserted the cable into the light cavity from the windscreen then tucked it under the headliner where it met the windscreen then pulled on both ends of the cable securing it - worked a treat and a snug fit. Guaranteed not to rattle

Everything went back into place nicely. As expected, no Phone menu on the MFD and I had to re-enter my RNS code.

On the side, I fear there is not much ventilation around the RNS which could spell overheating

The biggest trouble for me is refitting the A-pillar into the clips behind. Still struggling with it and installed the 9W7 several months ago

Oucha! I just lined up the clips to the holes, made a fist and bashed them in. If there was an airbag, I think it would have deployed

Ditto. Bashed mine so hard, left a mark on the plastic.

It's my own reminder of fitting the RNS 510

Great photos. How do you 'code' the RCD510, the manual that came with the RCD310 I'm replacing, says you need to code it, but doesn't tell you how?
    thanks, John

Hey Grave, have you installed the MDI yet? Where can you install the MDI in a polo? I've got a Polo on order but did not pick the audio pack, so I'll most likely have to install it myself.

Does anyone know if the MFD works with the RNS510 for TDI or TSI Polo's? The dealer is telling me it doesn't.

The dealer is correct. You need the high line MFD

I have the 9W7 module installed in my gti and find people have trouble hearing me...does anyone know if the module has a gain setting that can be adjusted...?
I have no trouble hearing them but, unless I lean over and just about shout into the ceiling light, it's hardly satisfactory...
    any input appreciated.
    cheers
