    Replacement Tyres from OEM Continentals

    Hi all,

About 2 years and 20,000km ago I had my original Continental tyres replaced with Bridgestone MY02 by the dealer at a scheduled service (I checked the price was equivalent to going to a reputable Tyre shop).

There is still plenty of tread but after having driven the car recently on wet roads I am absolutely shocked by how little wet weather grip they have.

These tyres are a hazard on wet roads. It is nearly impossible to avoid wheel spin when accelerating from traffic lights and sliding sideways while going around the large roundabouts near the entertainment centre is certainly fun but not at all safe if other traffic is on the road.

Do not get these tyres on your car.

What do you have on your car that you would recommend in the 215/40 R17 fitment.

    cheers

    Michael

I have Bridgestone MY02 fitted to my Golf Mk3 CL. They are an inexpensive tyre that is some tyre stockist import from overseas as the entry-level Bridgestone tyre. They do the job for commuting but they are not a performance tyre and I would not expect them to be necessarily even equivalent to the OEM Continentals.

What type of driving do you do? Are you looking for an inexpensive tyre for commuting to and from work or are you looking for a performance tyre?

    Hi Feenix74,

I need something for general commuting, these Bridgestones are fine in the dry but next to useless in the wet.

At 215/40 R17 you are going to find it hard to find an inexpensive commuting tyre, most tyres of that type of profile are going to be performance tyres which should give you great grip dry and wet but you pay for the privilege and generally they run softer rubber compounds so you get less mileage from them.

My wife's Golf Mk5 runs Bridgestone
Potenza Adrenalin RE003 (in 235/45 R17) they are one of the less expensive options for a performance tyre and they have performed well in both dry and wet conditions. However, you will probably find that they are a jump up in price from the Bridgestone MY02. Unfortunately, that is the extent of my experience with tyres of that profile.

Hopefully, some other forumites with more expertise and experience can jump in and assist you.

I know Bridgestone are a forum sponsor but I cannot keep these tyres on the car.

Current pricing for Bridgestone MY02 is around $160 while the Continental ContiPremiumContact 2 are around $215 so only around $200 a set difference.

Really what is everyone else running and what are your recommendations.

Bridgestone is a forum sponsor but that is not the reason why I suggested the Bridgestone RE003. They come in the size that you are looking for and I can speak from my personal experience on them because we have them on our Golf Mk5. We have never had Contis on any of my VWs so I cannot give you a recommendation on them one way or the other. My Caddy and (previously my Golf Mk3 for 15 years of commuting) run on Michelin Energy XM2s but these are 60-65 series commuting tyres. They have always given me good performance wet and dry and are extremely long wearing (my father who was a photocopier technician in Sydney and did 200-300 km a day, swore by the Michelins as the best value for money balance of wet/dry performance and long wear). I no long put Michelins on the Golf Mk3 and the two Ventos only because we do not do enough kms on these vehicles to justify shoeing them in the Michelins and the Michelins time expire before they run out of tread, so I started using Bridgestone MY02 and now Hankook Optimos (my tyre shop does not stock the MY02 anymore).

Without ever having driven on the Michelin Pilot Sports, I would not hesitate to put them on my wife's Golf Mk5 in future for the right price. From all reviews they tend to be a better performance tyre than the Bridgestone RE003 but if you are only commuting then you will probably save a few bucks with the RE003 and you will probably not notice the difference in wet/dry performance.

I would stay away from HiFly. I have two on the back of one of the red Vento, my brother's mechanic in Melbourne put them on for me to replace two old bald tyres on the red Vento when I bought it at auction and ferried it up to Canberra. They were fine on the drive through metro Melbourne but were truly scary when I hit the highway - not enough sidewall ply strength or tread grip at high speed so made high speed corners on the older parts of the Hume Highway very scary. Once we have finished fixing up the red Vento it will get two more Hankook Optimos before it goes to Daughter No. 1 as her daily.

This test says it all .... MOTOR Tyre Test 2018: Results

I know the size is different to your requirements, but you can get that winner in the size you want I believe.

You only have 4 tyres, each with a footprint about the size of your hand on the road. Do you really want anything but the best to protect, you, your car and others out there ..... skimping on tyres due to cost, is never a good idea.

Definitely true that one should not compromise on tyres but I disagree that this test says it all. They've included brands that no one has ever heard of but omitted two of the most popular, high quality brands in Bridgestone and Michelin.

That these brands were omitted raises questions in my mind about the objectivity of the comparison.

Over the years, I've found Conti, Bridgestone and Michelin to be excellent but I never buy the cheaper offerings even from these manufacturers, cheaper = compromise.

    Cheers

Michelin don't have a Pilot Sport in 215/40/17, but I'm going to 215/45/17 when I need new tyres. The extra rolling diameter will just about fix the speedo error plus take a small amount of harshness out of the impacts.

Might void warranty due to non-standard tyres. Check first.
