    Bridgestone is a forum sponsor but that is not the reason why I suggested the Bridgestone RE003. They come in the size that you are looking for and I can speak from my personal experience on them because we have them on our Golf Mk5. We have never had Contis on any of my VWs so I cannot give you a recommendation on them one way or the other. My Caddy and (previously my Golf Mk3 for 15 years of commuting) run on Michelin Energy XM2s but these are 60-65 series commuting tyres. They have always given me good performance wet and dry and are extremely long wearing (my father who was a photocopier technician in Sydney and did 200-300 km a day, swore by the Michelins as the best value for money balance of wet/dry performance and long wear). I no long put Michelins on the Golf Mk3 and the two Ventos only because we do not do enough kms on these vehicles to justify shoeing them in the Michelins and the Michelins time expire before they run out of tread, so I started using Bridgestone MY02 and now Hankook Optimos (my tyre shop does not stock the MY02 anymore).

    Without ever having driven on the Michelin Pilot Sports, I would not hesitate to put them on my wife's Golf Mk5 in future for the right price. From all reviews they tend to be a better performance tyre than the Bridgestone RE003 but if you are only commuting then you will probably save a few bucks with the RE003 and you will probably not notice the difference in wet/dry performance.

    I would stay away from HiFly. I have two on the back of one of the red Vento, my brother's mechanic in Melbourne put them on for me to replace two old bald tyres on the red Vento when I bought it at auction and ferried it up to Canberra. They were fine on the drive through metro Melbourne but were truly scary when I hit the highway - not enough sidewall ply strength or tread grip at high speed so made high speed corners on the older parts of the Hume Highway very scary. Once we have finished fixing up the red Vento it will get two more Hankook Optimos before it goes to Daughter No. 1 as her daily.

    So I had a look at 215/45/17s, the range is much larger than the 215/40/17s and the same tyres are cheaper...crikey.

    So if you do this to fix the speedo error does that mean your odometer is then out.

    No they are seperate.
    Cheapest way to fix problem is to go around corners slower To completly correct the speedo error in our Polo would take tyres that are over size and illegal in QLD

    The overall diameter can differ by upto +15mm or -26mm to be legal in QLD for a passenger car.

    True and to correct the speedo on our POLO which reads 106 at 100 it needs tyres that are 40 mm LARGER in diameter and therefore illegal
    Eg tyres are 195/55/15 diameter 595mm

    To get 6% correction they would have to be 195/65/15 which gives 6.3% difference diameter 635mm

    I hope thats right but this says it is Custom wheels, rim tire packages Put big size in first

    Mine reads ~104 kph at a 100 kph, that's when the tyres were brand new, so no reduction in diameter due to wear. Obviously a worn out tyre will give a more optimistic speedo reading. But tyre wear is unavoidable so it's the same for them all. A 215/45/17 is 3.6% larger in diameter/circumference than a 215/40/17.

    Larger diameter and weight may throw out ABS / stability control. Do you really want to risk voiding warranty and /or insurance?

    So 215/45/17 is actually over 20mm larger in diameter than 215/40/17 so not an option to go up, legally you can only go up to 15mm larger in diameter in Qld.

    This pretty much cuts back the tyre options again and Michelin don't seem to be in stock at that size (at least on Tyresales).

    Oh well, need to keep an eye out for specials...

    I don't know of any ABS systems that uses tyre weight or diameter in their algorithms. Plus a new tyre with full tread is larger in diameter and weight than a worn out (but still legal) tyre, so that would be an issue. Then there is the issue of space saver spares, a difference in diameter, profile and a huge difference in weight, it would be hard for a dealer to claim warranty breach just because we used the space saver. Of course the ABS handles that OK.

    It's worth noting that tyres aren't a warranty item themselves, they are consumables like brake pads.

    Seriously ...... new tyre tread depth is commonly 8 mm with a usable 6 mm before tread wear indicators. A 215/45/17 Michelin Pilot Sport is 624 mm in diameter and a 215/40/17 Continental is 605 mm. So a half worn 215/45/17 Michelin Pilot Sport (at 619 mm) would be under 15 mm larger diameter than a new 215/40/17 Continental and would therefore be legal.

    Are you really expecting a highway patrol officer to get out his verniers and measure your tyre diameter?
