    Recall Depreciation - Sell ?

    Hey all,

I'm pretty keen to be selling my Polo these coming months, I haven't entirely been turned off VW but this recall really makes me think that a lot of people may not want to buy a car that unfortunately for us has many issues. I have no idea what my asking price would be but having said that I want to sell the car with warranty so the next buyer can rest assure they wont be buying a total lemon.

I'm looking to buy a Golf but still a little hesitant. Whats peoples thoughts on this... would you buy a car that had a national recall?

Is selling a good idea and is going back to VW even a thought anyone would consider?

My trouble is I don't know any car that fits the standards of the Polo...without spending thousands more.

First off I would say definitely don't sell the car before it has had the recall done on it (if it applies to you). Even if it doesn't apply it would be best to wait to the others are fixed (should be by the end of the year) and that way when you go to sell you can reassure the buyer that the problems have been fixed "cough".

This would be my approach if I had to sell ASAP. Personally I'm going to wait a few years until it all cools down. Besides the DSG most of these cars are pretty good which is a good selling point and as you mentioned, for the price is bloody hard to beat.

Also reassure the buyer that the gearbox is covered for 5 years/150,000km which will reassure them more. Lets face it the media ONLY focused on the DSG problems so that's all customers know about. Just don't mention the oil consumption

    G'day mate,

If you are looking at a new Golf, there are no recall or DSG issues with the MK7. Its a very decent car that shouldn't cause you much trouble.

Another car that is worthwhile to look at is the Audi A1 if your looking for something the similar size to your Polo. As you probably know they are basically the same underneath although with different engine choices etc. But you will be spending a bit more than a Golf

I just had a look at the audi's. They are very nice but very expensive, easily $5-10 more then Golf. With extras and low kms it's close to 45-50k.

Oh and I'd be looking at the Mk6 Gti not the Mk7... I'd like to wait around for a few variants to come out before taking the first batch.

Well the MK6 GTI's now are free of problems what so ever and the DSG recall issues are to do with the 7 Speed Dry Clutch, which the MK6 GTI comes in 6 Speed Form.

If you want to avoid problems, its really silly to get an A1 because thats just a Polo in drag with a 10K price hike. The A1 sport has the exact same chassis, engine and gearbox as the Polo GTI, and the amount of stuff that isn't standard on it is shocking (no standard ipod, for instance).

If you want to stay VAG but avoid problems, I'd pick the MK7 or A3. Both based on VWs new chassis that forms the basis of all their new cars from Skoda to Bentley so it would of got a torrent of testing. The engines for the MK7 Golf are quite boring atm though, so wait til the Golf GTI rocks up, or spend a bunch on a fast A3 i suppose.

    Recall Depreciation - Sell ?

I've been given 2 trade in prices an have had confirmed reports of trade ins from other people, 1 with an unaffected Jetta the other with a polo.

My trade in offers were $6000 and $8000 respectively, the Jetta owner was told "we don't accept VW's as trade ins" as was the other polo owner.

Have a look on car sales and see how many VW's are moving at the minute, the answer is stuff all. Sales of new vehicles are down 26% compared to 5.5% GROWTH in the new car market.

The A1 has the same issues as the polos so unless you want more headaches....

Mk6 Golf still has problems but yes, they are less than the polo. Still have dodgy dsg issues and oil consumption problems on the TSI platform and if you get a 118tsi, it's the same as the polo GTI drivetrain as well.

I'd be very wary with the mk7, look what happened with the last "new platform" vw (polo) and the issues it has....

I think that you're stuck mate unless you can find an enthusiast to buy it who doesn't care about the perception of problems....

I think we should give it a chance before we start to make assumptions... Just because the last platform had issues, doesn't necessarily mean that the new MQB platform will.

That's a bit silly really, there's nothing wrong with the 6R Chassis and the 7sp DSG and the 1.4TSI were designed before the Polo. The 1.4 was from way back in 2005 and the 7sp showed up on the Mk6 Golf...

Either way selling now isn't a good idea while all this recall stuff is fresh in peoples minds but in 6 months, it'd be fairly easy to find a car dealer that just looks at the redbook valuation ($17,000 - $19,500)
