To the OP, I wonder whether it's the iPod rather than the cable that's an issue? Per the last post an iPod touch works, I'd suggest you try to borrow one from a friend and see how that works just so as to rule out a hardware to hardware issue between the iPod and the head unit.

    Just a thought

yeah thanks. I also tried my iphone 4 also. Which didnt work. The phone displayed something along the lines of not compatible with iphone message. The cable does charge both the classic and the iphone4 however i might add.

The iPod cable doesn't come with the sound pack unfortunately yet I got mine for $60 from the dealer, a bit of a rip considering the rcd510 seems to freeze and not recognize the iPod when it can't handle too many songs. Especially with the newer iPods and iPhones.

Mmmm interesting thought. What's the deal re RCD510 and firmware updates to keep track with hardware connected via the medi interface?

The cable should be part of the audio pack. Check sales brochure. My dealer said the same thing as if he was doing me some great big favour but I didn't burst his bubble.

No issue GTI JOE, it's the legit VW cable from what I can tell. Works a treat with the iPod, but only tested it for 15 minutes or so. Will report back if anything goes wrong.

Definitely worth asking your dealer about it though, as Geoff said. I was under the impression an iPod cable would come with an $800 audio pack, and I'd never pay $80 through the dealer for something I can get off ebay for $20. They might just throw it in for free if you look annoyed.
