I've recently bought a RCD510 premium 8, i have the 9w7 bluetooth kit but wondering if i need the MDI kit thing to be able to see the songs on the head unit and use it to play the music or will i just need the cord?

You could just stream your music via Bluetooth and that will also show your tracks on the RCD unit

+1 yes put music on the SD card that's the easiest! Or use bluetooth streaming.

The MDI system, which is a black box that has to be installed (and separate interface cable) are only if you want to use a USB stick or directly connect your iPhone to the radio (which I think is outdated)... I leave my phone in my pocket and use the bluetooth streaming. On the most recent 9W7 units since 2013 you can use PLAY/FORWARD/BACK buttons on the radio screen and you can even see the song name that the phone is playing over bluetooth. And the SD card has 20 gig of kids music for wife to play for the little ones.

SD Card is easiest and hassle free.
