Sorry for the silly question, but my RC310 doesn't look like that. Did you just take pics of the unit upgrade after you had done it?
Second question, what was the eBay seller? (PM would do)
Thanks!
I just recently replaced my RCD310 for a RCD510, process is as follows......
carefully pry apart trim, best to use a trim removal tool......(a flat head screw driver will suffice but be careful)......
Underneath the plastic trim are small clips, take care........Start from top left as shown, then top right and slowly pull the trim away from the dash.......
Thats the hardest part done.......
Next is to use a torx screwdriver to remove the four screws (one each corner).....
Once all four screws are removed hold unit from both sides and slowly slide out........(note that the aerial and main socket cables are curved behind the unit, it may require a little more gentle effort to remove)
When you have the unit out and are able to see the cables disconnect the aerial and main socket......
This simple upgrade cost me all up $400 off ebay inc postage.......was delivered next day

The RCD-310 does look like that - you just have to know that the unit takes up the whole space that the RCD-510 does, including what appears to be the surround! I think danntsi77 may have used pictures of the install portion to demonstrate the removal.
I used a smallish metal spatula to lever off the surround to make sure that I didn't mark the plastics - others have suggested a credit card but I found those to be too flexible. YMMV

As shown in the pics is a RCD510, i just did it to show how the unit comes out, its the same for the RCD310/RCD510...
Sorry guys i should have explained that, the original auido unit i had was a RCD310 basicly just a monochrome lcd display where as the RCD510 has the 6.5 inch color LCD touchscreen........
I also find that the audio quality is slightly better on the RCD510 and does not distort as much at higher volumes as the RCD310 did.......
I checked the seller on ebay i bought it off but he currently does not have a RCD510 for sale, just type "RCD510" into search into ebay.com.au
There are a few sellers in australia.

Great photos. How do you 'code' the RCD510, the manual that came with the RCD310 I'm replacing, says you need to code it, but doesn't tell you how?
thanks, John

Is this a straight swap? Do you need to code/program anything? I've got a MY12 77TSI coming in dec with RCD310 and I would like to replace it with the RCD510.
I've noticed that there are a couple of different versions of the RCD510. One has AM - FM buttons on the left hand side, the other has Radio, Media, Phone on the left. Anyone know why the differences? Later model, different model car fitment etc?
