I have the new polo GTI and I have to agree...

If I had more money... I'd still buy the Polo GTI and keep the spare cash

Jokes aside, both good cars. Just buy the one that suits you. The GTI is better built, is bigger, more powerful and has manual transmission. A few of the road tests out there (see the latest Wheels mag, with the 11 hot hatch shoot-out) have the Golf as slightly faster than the polo around the track, but neither is a track day weapon so that comparison is irrelevant to most. I for one was limited by my budget and for this money there wasn't a better car then the PoG. It is also more efficient and practical compared to my first car. It suits my every need at the moment. Rant over.

    Well said JA,
Just one more observation, with all the spare pesos, if one was inclined, the Polo GTI could be modified to go a lot quicker than a standard Golf GTI and still have more change in the kitty But they are both great cars, no argument there, but one gives you much more bang for buck!

My comparison is from the figures quoted by VW and after speaking with 3 dealers who all said the same thing, around phillip island, the polo kept up with the golf R, leaving the golf gti for dead other dealers in the uk have taken them out together and the golf can't keep up, even with launch control.

"Haha, I'd love to see a Polo GTI keep up to my brothers Mk6"
You haven't driven the the new polo gti have you? trust me,it's impressive I have driven both and my bum dyno can't split them for acceleration, the 250kg lighter polo is more agile though, firmer ride but I don't mind that, I buy a gti for it's handling, not comfort

Hey guys I picked up my polo gti yesterday and took it for a drive into the dandenong mountains and surprise surprise a 4 dr mk6 gti was tailing me, we waved at a set of traffic lights and played traffic light grand prix for a stretch I was suitably impressed the polo got the launch and pulled off the line quicker by 1/2 of a length, but golf reeled it in. I think lower weight played a part. And off idle torque. By the time we hit the twisties I was pulling away in tight corners and out braking the golf, but on straightaways he was catching. So pretty even but I think I had the margin.

Haha, nice. Good thing you're posting under a pseudonym. Though I think you're just the better driver.

Don't worry all driving was conducted within signposted limit

love the mark 6 golf gti but go for it if you have the extra $$$$.Personally in adelaide with heavy traffic,i would enjoy the polo gti for a change.Lighter and swift and still plenty of change left over besides its a change for me after a mark 5gti.Maybe down the track later years might go back to a golf gti. Both cars great.
Will be fair to update the qualities of the polo gti built in spain when i get mine from the dealer sometime in later months.....but so far having a seat ibiza after 16 years and its still solid and runs like hell. Will run it to the ground one day.

Then you should get a Golf TSI118, because that is essentially what the Polo GTI is minus the asthetics and xdl. Give it an ecu flash and you should be able to get from 0-100 in 7 secs or less I believe.
I did consider the Polo GTI but could not bear the wait time. However I went down the Golf GTI path and I am so glad I made that decision. Give that a stage 1 ECU flash and it will have ~400nm of torque and ~190kw of power.

I've never driven in a scenario like this but I've seen the Top Gear hill climbs which equate to a stock Polo GTI being about 2 seconds slower, albeit being a DSG. Golf GTI was a manual.

The driver of the MK6 GTI probably didn't even know he was in a race.
