POLO TSI - Manuf: 02/12 Couple of quick-ones for experienced Poloists

I read that some of you have questioned the 'day-time driving light' configuration, i.e. full-beam always on, no option to turn-off, only to parking-lights ... this isn't right is it? I have been driving my Polo TSI built 10/02/12 for a week now; yes, I have tried the [Method 2 - indicator stalk] thing without success, soooo that's it, it's back to VW and some software update? Next one ... how do you 'MUTE' radio without getting the voice menu? I really just want the 'MUTE' as in Golf with * button. Thanks, Paul

With the lights, you can't toggle the default for the dipped beam on or off using the instructions in the manual. There was another thread on here which I think mentioned it was something to do with a change in European standards.

Ok, again I will ask why people want the drl's turned off when it's to help you be seen so someone doesn't run into you when they don't look properly. The drl should be the "parker" globe in the headlight, not the dipped beam. This is a VCDS/dealer job to turn on and off. As for mute, press the microphone button on the steering wheel if you have the MFSW.

This problem is not the DLR's. The my12.5 polo's that have been arriving are actually configured to what is known as "permanent running lights" at this stage there is no fix available from Volkswagen. There is suggestion from various internet sources that it can be disabled however none of the methods have worked so far.
So your full lights will be on even with the switch in position 0, best temporary solution is to turn to parking lights..

Further to this and to answer Gavs, the mute button functionality has now changed to "voice activation" for the touch Bluetooth system.

Looks like VW are actively trying to upset buyers of the Polo with the badly done BT solution and now DRLs that are just lights that are always on, maybe thats the way to reduce the waiting lists... C'mon VWA, sort these things out!

joking aside tho, One would have to assume there is a VCDS setting for the DRLs, but perhaps that setting is only in use only with Xennons as those have the LEDs as separate lights, the non xennon cars have no LEDs so i guess some one decided to use dipped beam for it... strange choice as side lights would be more sensible and VW should be changing that wiring surely if people complain... unless the new DRL ADR ruling is that it cannot be side lights?

The latest ADR says that any light that is termed to be a daytime running light/lamp must have a luminous capacity of no less than 400(from memory) lumen. Side lights don generally put out that much light, I know that the LEDs at night on mine put out a considerable amount of light.

ahha! Cheers gavs, so mystery solved for the non Xennon lights then, the only bulb with enough capacity was the low beam... VW should have ponied up and fitted LEDs, but instead left us with a half solution we are stuck with. I guess the car is mid life and doing bigger things like this would mean more money on an older design that VWA wouldnt get back as they couldnt put the price up as other cars have the same things already in the package etc.

I always think that one of the nice things about VW products is that they are well thought out, but the additional equipment that seem to be creeping into the polo just isn't as well thought out as the rest of the package, and because of that it really shows.

Right ... I'm kind of clear ... so, no fix! ... it's full low beam during the daytime, then at night, one needs to switch 'manually' to full low beam, if as you'd want to have full dash illumination ... is this correct? The Gen 6 Golf has neat looking half-light PRLs and this is what I have been expecting. And as far as simplicity goes, our other car is a Gen V Golf, with it's lighting and audio system superior ... 6 years ago! Little disappointing I feel! Thanks guys for all your input, still can't make sense of this improvement ... can't have been difficult VW!

Well it can be fixed... just with a VCDS cable (a HEX+Can one at that)

You can also set the mute function with the VCDS cable too

Sounds techy ... What's a VCDS cable (a HEX+Can) and who has this sort of thing? Does a dealer workshop do this? I'll go and make my first inquiry/demand! Thanks!
