Sorry to bring back this thread.

Just wondering if anyone could post the Technical bulletin for the chain tensioner failing. I have a 2010 polo and its starting to rattle on cold starts, the car is way out of warranty so I'm a bit nervous

Does moderator or anyone know if this was a mandatory change by dealer during warranty period, as most of these will be out of warranty now ? Because I know mine was not replaced, although not showing any symptoms but for tiny rattle

Just get rid of it. I had a manual TSI 2011 with sports pack that I loved driving but went back to the dealer several times in the first year. Granted they were small things but several rattles and the car stalling at lights several times in the first year alone is frustrating. Your car is a dog box thats not going to change. I specifically got rid of mine so I wouldn't be left with a VW out of warranty. VW have nice styling and I loved the way mine handled but it seems to be hit and miss whether you have problems or not, chances aren the guy that bought mine might not ever have any problems now but it wasn't a risk I wasn't willing to take given the fact that I will probably be leaving my job and going to uni too.

It's not a mandatory change. You've got to have the noise. It's usually most prominent when the oil is cold. VW rarely carry out pre-emptive fixes.

    kar2390 - isn't that the TSB in post 4?

Oops my bad, I tried opening it but for some reason the image wasn't very clear. It was fine after I saved the image to the device.

So just wondering if a VW dealer would know the type of chain tensioner my car has installed at the moment. Also does anyone have an idea what this would cost.

Between $900-$1200 if the EA888 fix is an indication.

You really want to push to get this done under good will. Take a copy of the TSB. It will cost you about $150 to get a diagnosis done (refundable if they find a fault).

If they say it's normal, escalate it to VW Customer Care. If that is a dead ed then make sure you have something in writing that says you were concerned about an engine rattle from the LHS at start up & that VW couldn't identify a fault. It might give you some ammunition if it fails later.

If you come across as being persistant they might do it just to get you out of their hair.

Ok cool thanks for the info Brad, I've taken a few videos of the car on start up. I can only ask I guess if they can repair it under good will. Checked the engine number according to the TSB and mine falls before the production of the optimised timing chain.
