Thread: Which polo should I buy?

    Which polo should I buy?

I'm buying a polo. There is one that is 2010 with 91,000km and is $11,000. It hasn't had the timing belt replaced yet though and that'll be soon. There's also a 2013 polo from a dealer for $14,000 and that only has 30,000km. If I had the cost of the timing belt to the first one it's about $11,800 whereas if I pay 2,200 more I can get the 2013 one with a lot less km and no need to replace the timing belt.

Help? Which one should I buy?

    Thanks

All other options aside, if i were you i'd buy the newer one, as theres perhaps 3 years of oil changes and thats about all worth of servicing coming up for it (if everyhting goes well) but you might be up for other costs with the older one, like worn brakes, shocks, etc. It also gives you the opportunity to move it along when you dont need it anymore with 60,000km less on it than the other one will have.

I should qualify the above by saying I always buy old cars with lots of km on them.

Just a question.. Are you buying a TDI?

The only 6R Polo's with timing belts, are the TDI models.

The petrol ones are chain driven.

That being said the 2013 would have a revised timing chain which wasn't a susceptible to problems as the 2010 was.

No none of the ones I am looking at are tdi. Thanks for letting me know! Now that I know they don't use timing belts that kind of changes everything. I was thinking its coming up to 100,000km, oh no it must need a new timing belt, but they don't even use belts, they use chains !

Thanks. Picking a used car is so difficult. I don't know which one to buy

My 2014 TSI has a belt, as do all late TSI Polos with the euro6 EA211 engine. There is no maintenance required however.

For the OP, if these are DSG I would be looking at examples not affected by the oil recall since residual damage could have ocurred.

Yep, I did say the 6R is chain driven... We are not talking about the 6C here, which is what you have.

The 2013 if DSG equipped, will not be affected by the recall, the 2010 most likely will have been affected.

Advice from VAG Aus: "We will voluntarily recall 25,928 vehicles fitted with a 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) transmission (DQ200). The recall will be conducted across Golf, Jetta, Polo, Passat and Caddy models produced between June 2008 and September 2011."
