Excellent questions Frostee. I guess I am paranoid when it comes to these modifications as well. Hopefully Corey can shed some enlightenment and even encouragement
Hi Corey,
I am a total newbie re performance tuning such as this. Love the idea of re-mapping the "brain" but still have concerns that it could stretch the vehicle mechanically beyond safe limits (i.e. causing stress and wear that will possibly materialise in operational issues, that wouldn't have occurred if not tuned).
I guess my questions are
1. How does a paranoid person such as me convince himself that he's not inviting problems by tuning the vehicle as you describe
2. I understand that the remapping is reversible, but would you have to do this prior to every service so your dealer doesn't detect that you've messed with it? I know it might not be obvious that you have tuned/re-mapped, but it would seem to me that manufacturers and dealers would proactively go looking for such modification so as to flag a vehicle as warranty exempt
Cheers
Frostee

Hey Frostee, you're probably best to go to the Tuning and Performance (inc ECU upgrades) forum so as to not get this thing completely off topic
Joe, I work in IT. Not a techo but been around long enough to know enough that most things you do with data leave a breadcrumb trail.
Aside from the re-mapping vs mechanical impact of going outside manufacturer delivered tolerances (the light that burns twice as bright burns half as long scenario), I'd really like to understand at a data level how this mapping interacts with the data storage devides on the car.
You can delete files on a hard disk, but unless you overwrite the data etc it's all there to be recovered. I'm just concerned that if VW was hit with a substantial warranty claim they would have forensic hardware/firmware/data logging analysis as step 1 to try to weed out their accountable issues vs those created by those tinkering with the hardware/software. In my reckoning it should be pretty easy for them to set-up such analysis, given they commissioned the hardware they use in the car.
