Unless they run them in for 5,000km on the bench... and then everyone would whinge because they were being sold 2nd hand engines.
They would have to hook each engine up to a load of some description as there is no point just free revving.
I don't think any of the engines that feature low tension rings (VW, Subaru, etc) are run-in until at least 15,000km. Some don't seal until 25,000km. That doesn't make VWs 500ml/1000km acceptable unless it's in the first 1000km - after that it should be tapering off.
I didn't think Mikefc's usage was terrible for the first 8,000km & I got the impression that he hadn't physically checked the oil since new. Maybe I'm wrong.

Yeah, I dont think my engine has being run in - I am still using 10L/100km fuel consumption in inner city driving
I have checked the oil a few times as I have had to drive interstate although not the last 2000ks
Stage 2+ Intercooler Carbon Intake Downpipe Swaybar DV+ Remsa.
Consumption test done - only used 300ml in 1,000kms. So I guess that does prove the brand of oil you use does mean different figures for consumption.
Was using Liqui Moly and it was well above 500ml / 1,000kms but the for consumption test they used Castrol.....
Still, a brand new car using 300ml every 1,000kms isn't ideal
Polo GTI - 5 door - Candy White, Xenons, Comfort Package, Audio Upgrade, Bluetooth, Parking Sensors and Tint
It doesn't really seem to matter with the Twinchargers - some have the oil blowby/low compression issue and some don't, with mileage and driving style not making any difference.
Gambit is the best example, I know of. His original GTi didn't use any noticable oil and when it was replaced after hail damage, the replacement used lots of oil. Same driver and I doubt he would have run them in any differently.
