Polo GTI High Oil Usage - Discussion Thread

Not at all my Italian friend, if not for you and your knowledge, most of the community would still be in the dark regarding changes to the oil separator, breather pipe, CTHE engine changes etc.

Please don't generalize like this - Greece is a beautiful country with warm - albeit passionate - people. I've been treated with nothing but the utmost respect while visiting there on several occasions.

Not sure what was up with Varnak though - it was the middle of the night for him when he wrote his last few posts. Maybe he was sleep-ranting!

I second gavs comments re kawabanga - always informative and, yet, able to maintain normal decency! You're much appreciated, kawabanga.

Back on topic - in my car, anyway, there seems to be a correlation between the type of oil in the car, and the amount consumed. This remains to be confirmed, but it sure is looking that way. I realize it might not be the case for everyone, and it certainly hasn't made the oil consumption "normal" but I have peace of mind that I can space out the oil checks a little bit without having to worry about it. Until VW comes up with a bloody fix!

I doubt it's a commercial agreement within Australia. Fuchs is a boutique brand over here & not readily available.

I agree with Gavs. Different brands of oil can have the same numbers on the bottle & behave differently - whether it be cold start noise, high rev breakdown of the hydraulic lifters, oil burning, etc.

Changing oil might not be the solution to the problem but it may make an effective, temporary band-aid.

Varnack - I'll put your lack of diplomacy down to being NESB.

Thank you brad for your qualified-mechanic opinion

Crap, I said I wasn't going to chime in anymore.....

Oh, one last thing. For those of you interested, in Australia Fuchs is stocked by Bursons as the only retail chain, otherwise specialist workshops etc have it available.

I'll be interested to see if it makes a difference, too. I'm almost out of my 5 litre bottle of Shell Helix Ultra Extra - I still have a litre left, and am coming on 25000 kms, so it has made a reasonable difference compared to the VW LongLife. I'm a little reluctant to try something else, that may not be as effective but may be more expensive(?).

    Anyone try it yet?

Polo GTI High Oil Usage - Discussion Thread

Guys with the high oil consumption:
During warm-up (before the oil temperature reaches 75 deg C), do you 'nurse' the car, or do u apply large throttle openings?
    Let's hear...

^^^^...I would've thought that you would always wait for the engine oil to warm to normal operating temperature before flogging it? no matter if you are consuming oil or not.

Well after having greater than 1L/1000km oil consumption, my engine decided to give way yesterday displaying EPC and Engine light. NRMA advised it was misfiring.

I will get it towed to VW tomorrow and see what is going wrong ><! Hopefully this is the cause of the oil consumption.

I never ever go more than 50% throttle or higher revs than 4000rpm before my engine oil reaches 80 degrees celcius. Dont have an oil issue with the engine but gearbox started to give cranking noise when on engine braking at 4th gear and on manual mode. 2nd gear also started to have minor juddling. Mileage 12500 km now
