I was told 1L/1000km is acceptable oil usage by Austral VW in Brisbane. That means 15l consumption annually. 5l of 5W30 costs $75 min. So based on this consumption rate (which is totally unacceptable, but OK by VW) you are in front in less than a year. That way (replacement) VW has no excuse for consumption if it remains as they have no other solution.......
I reckon it's an inadequate oil sparation issue. The one in the timing cover meant to do it is too small. There is an engineering issue, routing in an external separator is my next solution.
Seriously, it all comes down to the dealer you take it to. Without question, my dealer booked it in to be fitted and the process took 1/2 a day.
My consumption wasn't super excessive (as some on here) but I think that now some dealers know all the issues and rather than fighting customers, they're just replacing stuff. I can't stress how finding a 'good' dealer helps the process........
