Based on my experience with high performance cars, I'll say that many of these engines do consume more oil than less performance oriented engines. Also, the same engine on different cars can be quite different even if both cars have been through the same run in procedures. Case in point, we had two high performance cars that use the same 6.2 litre V8. On the first one, we needed to top up oil every 2500km, whereas on the second one high oil consumption has never been an issue. Just don't ask me the science behind it.

6.2L V8? That would be holden based products and hence, your oil consumption issues

Anyone remember the first shippment, sorry, first, second, third..... Shippments of the "incredible" Gen III V8 that had a major recall on them due to oil consumption? Turns out the mexicans (factory where the engines were built) kept on putting the wrong pistons in them!

For those of you being told bulls*it about "running in" oil and who have to top up your oil, ask the people at the dealerships telling you this how your car has used so much oil, yet others haven't had a top-up in close to 10,000kms and see what their answer is There is no difference in the oil, if the oil was "thinner" then it would be a different weight and would not match the VW oil specifications therefore, VW would be voiding their own warranty on the engine. Please people, don't believe the bull that comes out of these people mouths, as many of us 6R buyers / owners have found over the short journey so far, a good amount of the time you are being told something by one of these people, they have no idea what they're talking about.

Having seen similar debates on the mini forums about oil, the consensus of the people in the know was that you should top up with exactly the same spec and brand as what's already in the engine. Even though different brands may meet the same performance specifications they may do so based on different formulations that don't necessarily play nice together when mixed in an engine.

If you can get the dealer to top it up for free then it's a no-brainer to do it this way. Same oil as what's already in there and free

Nah, it's just that one of your cars was thrashed by the wharphies or dealership before you got it, and there for the critical <100km thrashing was done

This would make sense if the dealers were actually using the same oil AND "oil additive to make this supposed 'break-in oil'" that the factory did. The factory apparently uses a Castrol oil which is commercially available. Yet, at least the commercial version, isn't some special "break in oil", which raises interesting questions. So it would indicate that the factory is using some type of additive.

Not all the dealers are even using Castrol. None can tell you what the additive is...

So my 2c is... use your common sense and just make sure you're sticking to what the owners manual says

Curious, do you mean Mexicans as in south of the US or Mexican as in South (west) of Sydney lol. I ask this because years ago they used to assemble the engines in Port Melb. I'm not sure if they still do that. BTW, you are very knowledgable on all things Polo and car related. Keep up the sharing!
