Thanks to this thread I've decided to join after months of lurking around here... As far as I know I probably have the worst luck for oil consumption in NZ :|

I'm on my 3rd test now, had two top ups from the dealer in the last 2000ks with one done myself the very first time I had the oil warning light on... and was told they had used 700mls in top ups? (to my knowledge extends to knowing that dipstick A to C is about circa 1L? Correct me if I'm wrong)... Those "tests" the car didn't even get to 1000km before needing to top up

Perhaps dealer negligence in issue but for both tests nothing was done to seal the engine cover to prevent voiding the test up until the 3rd time (this week) when supposedly the breather pipe mod was done (with no available evidence to suggest nor paperwork) when the "HOLD" sticker was used with the test reference number.

The Detroit wheels were kerbed extensively on one side when I collected the car, there was a crack on my headlight, a scratch on the drivers door... luckily for me I hadn't driven the car off yet and it was still at reception.

Back in the stealership for the car, was reassured that they have a strong policy on damaged cars on premises etc. And luckily the car was also due in for new clutch packs that same week...

Not bad for a 2nd post huh?

I thought it was time to contribute my experience on my April 2013 (built Dec 2012) CTHE-engined Polo GTI. I'm doing very low mileage at the moment, almost exclusively gentle driving in D in urban traffic. In the 7 months since I got the car, I have completed only 3,100KMs. The yellow "check oil" light came on at 1,600KMs and was topped up for free. Now, with 3,100KMs on the clock I can see that the oil level is again only just registering on the very bottom of the dipstick, well below the hatched area and I'm anticipating the light coming on again any day. I washed the car today and it's pretty sooty round the back.

So, that looks like 2L of oil in 3,000KMs. I've got a good relationship with my VW dealer in Christchurch and will get a consumption test done. Can someone remind me, what's the officially acceptable level of consumption (assuming there is such a thing), below which I can insist on something being done?

    Thanks,

    Simon

The manual says something about that... I can't remember but yours seems a bit borderline tbh...

I've got a good relationship with the folks here at Giltrap but lucks just not with me...

1L/2000km, but check your own manual to verify.

Using more then 1L/1000km after the breather mod is a engine change.

I assumed that the breather mod was already incorporated into the design of the CTHE engine, as one of the improvements over the CAVE engine. Is the not the case?

CTHE contained many of the supposed "fixes" that were implemented in the CAVE consumption campaigns as well as a different oil separator and internals.

As I have said before, until they fix the tolerancing issues with the manufacturing and accept the fact that they have screwed up on multiple occasions in their pursuit for fuel efficiency, VW cannot fix this problem. 'The cars are meant to be driven hard so they don't burn oil, use thicker oil, it's not an auto so you can't drive it like one even though that is how it's sold...'

All common comments from dealership service departments because they really have no ability to fix the problems because vw won't let them.

I'm pretty sure "pulling apart the engine" doesn't count as engine change...

Only time will tell... Also asked about the number of issues re oil consumption in Auckland and was told only 3 vehicles

I was told they can't warrant anything out such as the case with breather mod and engine rebuild without contacting with VW Germany because of warranty costing i.e to be paid to do the warranty repair work - is that the case?

Wrong. VGA (Volkswagen Group Australia) makes the reimbursement payments to the dealerships, it's their call, not VAG. The computer systems link back to Wolfsburg yes, but it's the call of VGA to fix the car under warranty.
