Guys, I have a suspicion that there is a contributing factor on running-in the new engine with the 504.7 specs(Low SAPS) Castrol oil. I am aware it might be a manufacturing tolerance issue on few cars with really bad oil problem.

My car do not have an issue with oil consumption and at 500km I changed the oil and filter, replace with cheap American Mobil 1 5W30. Been running on it since then but I change them out at 3000-4000km intervals especially after it has done cross country trips where the oil see high oil temp.

It has been 12,000km and total oil consumed is estimated to be around 2-3mm on the dipstick. I will send this batch of used oil for used oil analysis to check for fuel dilution and other wear factors. I will be switching to Mobil ESP 5w30 or PENNZOIL ULTRA 5W30 EURO L which is both 504.7 specs.

Seems like everyone is having the oil issues with these polo gti, some people were able to get a new engine because of the issue. My car is about 8 months old now and I reckon i have put close to 6 litres of oil into it and got the oil filter changed and complete drained and put some fresh penrite oil into it too see any improvement but dose not make a difference. And the car has only done 8000kms. Like clock work every month the dipstick is right ad the bottom sometimes just below it i have to top it back up again.

And not to mention people are having an issue with the DSG gearbox. I have to admin I have not had an issue with mine but have lost a bit of confidence in the car and would not like to own it once the warranty has expired. Which is a shame because this is my first brand new car, and i was planning on keeping it for 10 years and modify it my way along the way. To build the hot hatch i have always wanted.

I am seriously considering just selling the car so i can pay off the rest of the loan and just buying one of the polo gti 9n3 which seem to be almost bullet proof after reading this forum or a tdi golf/polo.

Does anyone else feel this way that they always have a niggling in the back of there head that something is going to happen to it or am i just crazy and just keep it?

Re: Polo GTI High Oil Usage - Discussion Thread

i spoke to the dealer yesterday and he advised that i only need to change oil once the oil light comes on.. not when the mfd warning comes on.. when the mfd warning comes on that means i have used 1L out of the 4.5 litres in the engine..

The total oil capacity should be 3.5 liters...

In the meantime in Italy people (at least four or five so far) who had high oil consumption test, then new engine, then new breather pipe and still have high oil consumption arrived at this final decision jointly with VW: GTI back to the dealer and brand new car of the VW group of the same initial value of their GTI (or paying a difference if the cost is higher)...
This means that a definitive solution will never be found by VW for those who have this problem, they have just thrown in the towel...

Well... this is probably my last post in this thread. I planned to keep my polo well past warranty, but with everything that happened I lost faith in the car (1 rebuilt engine, 1 new engine, water pump, and clutches all in 1 year of ownership and lower than average mileage!) and made the decision to sell whilst there was plenty of warranty and the oil breather did appear to have patched things up with my oil consumption. I had contacted Consumer Affairs and was basically told because VW was 'fixing' it every time I was very unlikely to get anything in regards to compensation unless I took them to VCAT. The excitement of having a new car has just been replaced by a extremely disappointing experience, I won't be buying a new Volkswagen again. I will continue watching this thread with interest and hope others find a solution to their issues.

I've had the new vent hose put in about 3 weeks ago. So far NOT so good. Dipstick is down to the bottom. Already. So, I will have to keep keeping a close eye on it for now.

    I shouldn't be, but I'm actually surprised!

Karly101 - I feel for you! It's a pity Consumer Affairs don't care, especially when you've had that much trouble.

Rob - Getting the breather pipe fitted next week, I'm not holding my breath either!

Our GTI had 800ml of oil added at 1000k's and a further 600ml added at 1500k's. Since then it hasn't used a drop and we're at 5500k's and still on the original oil in the car. So not All GTI's are affected. Just thought I'd post a positive in amongst all the negative.

Yea im sure not all of the polos gti are having the issue. Its most likely a very small percentage, but my one has been using a lot and vw just keep telling me its expected. How could it be expected if i was to drive from Brisbane to townsville and back again to fill up at least 4 times with oil. I did this in my old golf 1.6l and the dipstick did not move at all through out the entire trip.

I have done over 8000Kms on the polo gti and the oil issue does not seem to be getting better or worse its always at the bottom of the dipstick at around 1000kms.

You all know that you can return the car to VW and ask for a refund / replacement don't you? It's like if you buy a TV that only half the screen works. The car is "unfit for purpose" and/or "does not match the desription and/or expected performance of the example shown at time of purchase".

Just because it's a car, it doesn't mean that the laws are any different.

kevinctr, the oil that is factory fill is 504.00/507.00 spec, not 504.7 which is a different specification all together. Yes, i agree that the Castrol Edge 5W30 that they put in the cars is rubbish and burns off too easily hence why I do not use it. However what you are advocating is that people fill their vehicles with a non approved oil to see if the oil consumption drops. Not a good idea my friend because those people will then have an oil sample taken and then tested if they claim ongoing consumption issues. If they have not drined the non approved oil and done a full flush with approved oil prior to taking the vehicle in, bye bye warranty claim, hello $20,000 for a whole new engine.
