    Update:

2000kms, usage is about 2.5mm above the hatched area on the dipstick so based on a 4.5 litre oil capacity, I'd say no more than 1 litter has been chewed up. Fingers crossed, looks like my run in method has removed the chance of a 2 stroke Gti....

Low oil level warning has finally came on at 4800km.

Topped up (300ml?) with VW stealer's oil. ($125 for 5L...I think)

That's heavily overpriced, you can buy a 1L bottle of the Penrite Enviro+ 5W30 for $16 from Supercheap or Autobarn.

Only at 2300km and got the first oil light just the other day. Only had it two months, was a bit perplexing really! Was straight to the nearest dealership, who topped it up no questions asked. Said the initial oil used in GTIs is a thinner running-in oil, which usually burns up quickly.

Glad to see it isn't an isolated problem...

Yep, and you can buy Liqui-Moly Top-Tec 4200 5W30 for $80 or less too!
They even have it at Autobarn these days too!

Wouldn't you only need to have the running in oil in the car for like the first few 1000 k's if that?
I was planning on changing my oil by 3000k's and then in between each service as well.

Based on my experience with high performance cars, I'll say that many of these engines do consume more oil than less performance oriented engines. Also, the same engine on different cars can be quite different even if both cars have been through the same run in procedures. Case in point, we had two high performance cars that use the same 6.2 litre V8. On the first one, we needed to top up oil every 2500km, whereas on the second one high oil consumption has never been an issue. Just don't ask me the science behind it.

I had to fill up (half a liter) of oil for the first time at 5600km. I guess 1l/10000km ain't too bad, but I hope the consumption will fall a bit.
