    Well, just as a heads up and I apologize to those that are having issues, I don't mean to sound like I'm gloating by any means.

    My car ticked over 20,000kms today and to date, it has used approximately 2L of fully synthetic. I can also confirm that the burn rate of Castrol EDGE Professional 5W30 is much higher than that of Liqui-Moly Top Tech 4200. To the tune of ~500ml in 3000kms compared to ~750ml in 12,000kms. Similar driving styles, cooler ambient temps on the Castrol and far less mountain runs. Same petrol (always Bp ultimate) from the same 2 service stations. The Castrol also seems to have developed a toasty aroma, the Liqui-Moly always smelled like oil until the last 2000kms it was in the motor.

    Hey RandomX - better than mine! MY12.5 Polo GTI - 1000km - oil light came on! ALMOST empty too

    Apparently even when the oil light comes on there is still sufficient oil in the motor , my service guy said a 1ltr top up at 1000 km intervals is within an acceptable range for VW POLO GTI .

    I have only done 700 km and my oil level is near the bottom part my car is also a 12.5 Polo GTI taking car in on monday to get a top up .

    Here is a post by a Doctor Clive Fraser in relation to the high usage of oil in the NEW POLO GTI Wish i had read more info or found this site earlier before my purchase , i am not a happy camper VW Australia

    HI,looks like its pretty common experience as my gti del last dec done 800km,the oils gone too.Had that top up once and now is about 2500km.Still check weekly as i was told they would consider a comsumption test when its about 5000km.Still enjoy the drive though theres are issues still on the waiting list.cheers tay

    agree with you but it is so hard to determine exactly where the oil should be on the stick the manual doesnt actually point dirrectly to the level that is required scratching my head ?

    My VW based manual says "keep it between these 2 marks - this is the maximum & this is the minimum."

    But, the doctors are smarter than mechanics and I wouldn't discount his statement regarding some VW engines excessive oil consumption. He indeed nailed it.

    Tell your service guy to go back to school to learn to read seeing as the manual says "1L per 2000kms with greater consumption during the first 5000 kms or if driving in warmer climates and with more engine load, like driving a mountian pass."

    When the light comes on, you don't have near sufficient whatsoever! That light comes on to say "Hey buddy, we need to stop where we're going and detour to buy some oil to fill me back up because I'm running hella low!". If the red oil light comes on, you switch that engine off immediately and call VW custome service and get your car towed to the nearest VW dealership.

    The dipstick in that motor only shows the top litre of oil in the sump, that's it. So if the manual tells you that once the oil level drops down into the hatchings, you need to top the oil up immediately, wouldn't one think that the oil level should never drop below the bottom of the dipstick? So if the light has come on and old mate has said "she'll be right!", I wouldn't be trusting a single word out of old mate, sorry.

    Yep. As discuss previously in this thread, when the low oil light comes on, there is sufficient oil to drive the car safely when not doing anything dramatic but throw in some hard corners, braking and acceleration and then the oil surge can cause the pickup to be uncovered. This will momentarily starve the engine of oil and today's low friction engines with lightweight oils can't tolerate this for long.
