MY12 polo GTI delivered in Nov 2011. One of the first MY12's but without the the Rcd510 or Bluetooth. Week 26 I think.

Currently has 4476km on it and has been topped up with 4.5L of oil before it went in to the dealer today to get it checked. It was also 1/2 way down the dipstick last night when I got home so probably needed another 500ml.

To the dealers credit when I told them how much I had used before I booked it in they said bring it in we will get it checked. No stuffing about with oh it May use some oil before the first service. Loan car was no issue besides a weeks wait for one to be available.

So the outcome when I went to pick it up this afternoon was as follows from the head service manager.

"Normally the outcome would be we would do a consumption test and then replace the rings to fix it. Problem is yours has already got the new type of rings in it so we waited for a response back from VW on what to do. I can only show you some of the report but the response from VW is there is no fix at this time."

There were a few highlighted lines on the report of what they said they could show me from the service bulletin stating there is no fix at this time. He then hands me 5L of oil and says "please keep topping it up until VW or myself call you to bring it in for a fix"

He then says "they have engineers working on several solutions at the moment back in Germany and are currently testing the outcomes of these solutions."

When he brought the car around, he said his guess is that he will call me in a month or two and I'll be having the engine replaced.

When I got home I went to check the oil to see if they had topped it up and noticed green paint on the oil cap and the dip stick to mark if it had been opened. Looks like they we're ready to do a consumption test before they got the report back from VW.

I'll post back when I get some new info.

Thank you guys for sharing one of the same problem apart from plenty other s....Mines delivered mid dec and at 800km,i had top up 1/2 litre.Have inform the service tech dept in adelaide and he suggested after 1000km ,can do the consumption test.Do you honestly think i should consider doing it or wait further down the track for better piston rings update.Just too many problem issues already.I better stop complaining about my old seat ibiza 1.4 which is 17years old is definitely putting these damn new cars to shame.

The first topup took a while to come around and it has got worse.
    1800km 1L
    2700km 1L
    3100km 1L
    3800km 1.5L
    4400km 0.5L

I'm thinking the 2700km top up probably should have been more than 1L but i could not check the dipstick properly (no level ground) at the time as sister inlaw was borrowing the car and just popped by to top up the oil and same again for 3100km.

Must admit i'm not too fussed at the moment as VW have acknowledged the issue and are working on a fix and provided oil for the topups. I have a 1L bottle in the boot in case i get caught out, but checking once a week is just another 30sec on top of the weekly tyre pressure check.

The supposed fix is a whole new engine so I wouldn't hold your breath my friend...

If the fix is a new engine, then so be it. As long as the warranty keeps covering it and they give me a loan car while it is at the dealer, then the fix can be anything they want it to be. I've had no issues yet with the whole process and i hope it stays that way.

You have got to give people/organisations the opportunity to do the right thing. I'd be surprised if VW set out to have this issue deliberately. I'm sure they wish it was not happening and it must be a PITA to try and resolve.

Modern (non-racing) 2 strokes engines use less oil than that!! Assuming you are getting 10l/100km or betterfor mileage.

Has anyone dared to try a slightly heavier grade of oil?

This thread should be stickied as a "Known" Polo GTI fault...its passed 50 pages i think its ready to be stickied now... just like the "What have you done to your polo thread" so new owners can easily find it stickied to see new mods, or current ongoing problems with Polos/GTIs
