I think that when they will find a solution will be inserted in the production lines... This could mean a new engine or new piston rings, I don't know, but a recall for all the GTIs on the market using those new components should only be the right and minimal move from a serious brand like VW...

I agree, but they don't have to use time limits referred to warranty: if my GTI will show the problem in two years, at that time the warranty will be expired, what I have to do? Replace the engine with my money...? No, thanks...

I'm off for an oil consumption test on my May 2011 Build GTI. Ive done 6000kms and used over 3 litres of oil.Not happy. My old Mazda SP23 didn't use 3 litres in 60,000km's!

Dad's polo had an oil consumption test and it had used 750ml in 1000kms. Further investigation by Volkswagen determined that position rings need replacing so out comes the motor!
Basically getting oil past the piston rings. To be fair though.....The car would either be blowing black smoke or white smoke if it was burning that much oil.
Well this is what Volkswagen have determined after having the car for a day and doing their own tests so I'll back them in. Pretty sure they would have done anything to avoid changing the rings if they weren't sure.
Hi all
I have been told by the service manager that they wont do an oil consumption test before 10000kms.
Any thoughts on the reply he gave me below.........
"Volkswagen advise that the engine is still running in until approx 10000kms and some oil consumption, given the grade of oil used in the engine in the factory, is not unusual and to be expected. If oil consumption of greater than .5 ltr per 1000 kms is experienced post 10000kms an oil consumption test can be conducted. We could start an oil consumption test (drain and refill the engine oil) however this would obviously drain the factory engine oil which is not recommended."
Any advice from those who have had similar experiences would be appreciated.

Official line from VW was that the running in period where the engine is expected to burn more oil than normal is the first 5000kms.
And by "drain and refill engine" he is refering to the oil that has probably been used to top up because if you have been topping up enough to need a consumption test, fair chance there's not much of the original, factory oil left....
I would call into another dealership and get their thoughts on the matter.

I can tell you that mine was started at 8,000km and it was going through heaps of oil, and at the rate you have quoted I doubt you have much factory oil left so I would request one to be done sooner. At that rate I can't see it suddenly becoming better now its at 6,000km.
