They could look closely at your oil in the sump and your engine while dismantling it. Ever watched NCSI and similar on TV?
You're right brad. The user manual also used the word 'approved'...'if possible'.
I'm not convinced it would really affect your warranty - how would they prove your oil was not approved? - but hey, why go looking for trouble?

I've been dealing with barlow world VW fivedock in Sydney.
Valid point. Why give them any reason to try and put the blame on me.
Although, i did ask the service advisor at my dealership if it mattered what brand the engine oil was or anything like that, to which he replied "no, as long it's the 5W-30 grade".
Anyway, i think im going to try changing oils to an officially VW "approved" one just to be on the safe side.
Typical VW service advisor......a bit like the one that told me the 2.0 TSI Jetta loan car I had been driving was supercharged and turbocharged..........they wouldn't know which way was up!
If push came to shove, you saying the service advisor told you this, would carry no weight (and would be denied no doubt), the documentation that came with the car says clearly the specifications of the oil and you are responsible for what you put in the engine.
How's the oil consumption going now?
Cheers

Finally managed to remember to check my oil since I had it topped up with a litre by the dealer back in late July. It is almost full, so appears to not be using much at all, which is good news.

It's about 5000 km. When I hade my dealer do a top up it was at about 1/3 but I decided on getting it tooped up as I was going to do a fair bit of driving that coming weekend. I think I'll get an oil change done in December, which is after about 6 months since I took delivery

At 7500km mine is now starting stage 1 oil consumption test... took it in for first service and I think it is slowing down but decided it was safer to get it tested and recorded...
