I thought updated pistons and rings predated the oil squirters
Interesting. I've only heard about the oil squirters, not the pistons. Good to know!

I was never offered the pistons and rings. That was part of the 3rd step "engine rebuild", after ventilation hoses and... Damn, what was the other thing? I though the squirters were to AVOID an engine rebuild and replacement of pistons and rings.

I'm in the middle of an out of warranty oil consumption test. I know my car still uses too much, so it will be interesting to see what the outcome will be.

I also had the vent hoses done (at 6k kms) and a few other little things like that over the years, none of it made a blind bit of difference.
The squirters are under the pistons, so swapping them is something your average vw dealer will take about a week to do it seems. Sigh. Its not like they are that hard to get it, sump off... move a few things and 'oh hello squirters...'. Changing the pistons at the same time and swapping the clutches... now thats a month. Pathetic isnt it?! Maybe you have a better dealer than me... it wouldnt be hard! [1]
The pistons and rings were always on the cards for oil burning cars up to / incl MY12.5, it was MY13s that have the new ones. If you have a MY13 they just clean the gunk out of the rings and put it back together it seems, but early models get the new pistons to MY13 spec.
(MYs are not an exact ref point, and even engine number isnt it seems, they have to pull them out and look at them to know what you have in there)
Have to say that the pistons/rings and squirters were the fix for me, I washed the car last night and the tail pipes are still clean after I polished them about 3000kms ago. I never thought Id see that day... I'd given up on the bright finish and convinced myself they were matt black... And... Oil checks always show the car isnt using any oil at all now.
[1] A note on leaving your car at the dealer for a month... always note all marks and dents and check the car thoroughly when you get it back. They will damage it. I promise. It will be in their way while they wait for VWA to approve things, so will be pushed about their shop enginless. you have been warned. Also their loan car will probably require you to pay $25-40/day to get comp insurance, else its 5k or something silly in case of any (even non fault) accident. VWA will not fund the loan car insurance. You may be able to swap your own car insurance over to the loan car, but usually not as these are sub let from a 3rd party and not even the dealer has much say over the insuarnce of it. I agreed they would do comp for a one off fee of $40 as an admin charge after I went ballistic when they suggested I paid for insurance on a car while my fully insured car holidayed at their place. 28 days it was there... 28 days x $40 = well over a grand!

Oil squirters was done last Monday 01/03/15, took the dealership half a day, which I thought was very quick. Will keep an eye on the oil levels

2 days is a reasonable time. The job itself only takes about 2-4 hours. However a good dealer/mechanic will want the sealant to dry overnight and test in the morning for any oil leaks.
Had my Fabia done a couple of weeks ago. Let them have it for 2 days to make sure they didn't rush it. So far bugger all oil usage.
You lot crack me up, I could make so much money if it wasn't for warranty! Pistons have revised oil cooling jets. Completely new arrangement compared to the old ones, and oil injectors are smaller, I guess our tropical climate Dosent call for so much cold start help.
The hoses don do anything. It's just something to get paid for buy warranty. I do chains Pistons and oil injectors. Full rebuild. U need to tell the dealer it's noisy on start up and burning oil. Should take 3 days back to customer. If they stuff you around just bring it to my work. Or pay me to do it!!
