I'd say that there is more to it than this, since the basic engine block is the same as the 90TSI and 118TSI Golf's, Jettas etc which sell in far greater quantities than the Polo GTI.
Whatever you do Miles make sure, ON THE WAY HOME FROM THE DEALER, that once the engine oil has reached operating temps (I'm not sure what that is for this engine... 90 degrees?), that you FLOOR the accelerator and DRIVE the thing spiritedly. Don't hold back, and certainly don't baby it.

Miles, you can reject the work by law if indeed it hasn't been fixed and VW have to refund you all monies paid for supplying you with a deffective vehicle that does not meet the purpose / description oulined in the contract of sale or something-or-other. As a follow up, the block and head are the same, internally, I'm not so sure (but it only affects CAV-E engines, Not CAV-a, b, c, d), the forced induction system differs. I wonder with the higher output of this motor, if they have used new componentry at the big end. Audi A1 is identical in it's engine, will be interesting to see what the take on the situation is from them.
EVO in the uk (magazine) recently had to take their Polo GTI long-termer back to VW because it ran out of oil....

So Gavs, you are obviously ok at this stage with your oil consumption? I'm starting to rethink my GTI purchase and whether it's going to be more of a headache. I do love the car and will love driving it when it arrives but it seems that the issues are going to stick around.
Do you really think the running in method (within the first 100kms) actually helps???

^ It worked for me. I picked up my car in Mildura and drove straight back to Melbourne, about 600km, floggin it most of the way..when warmed up of course My oil level is pretty stable now having only topped it up very slightly at 1500km, it's done 4500km now.

Yeah, mine is fine at this stage. Did top it up after a few, "enthusiastic" acceleration runs when bedding the new pads in bed other than that it was fine. Will drop the oil and refill with new filter and sump plug soon, Liquimoly topteck 4200 seems like a good choice

Yeah, LiquiMoly TopTec 4200 is the oil I used for the top-up. I think on my first service I'll try to ask the service department if they can drop some of this stuff in instead of the Castrol brand. Seems like a better performing oil.

I topped up a few times and changed my oil at 8,000kms.
It was absolutely disgusting. I couldn't have imagined running it for another 7,000kms on that oil.
