Polo GTI High Oil Usage - Discussion Thread

hi guys...i'll be quick...my2013 polo gti...not sure if its is cave or cthe engine...oil light came on at 4800km...topped up myself(it was a sunday) with 500ml until it came on again at 5500km..had oil and filter changed by my mechanic(vw oil filter,castrol edge 5w-30) just passed 8000km oil light again,extremely low on dipstick

took it to vw sutherland today,and there telling me i shouldnt have changed the oil until 15000km and that i have possibly voided my warranty!?!?!?! booked in for oil consuption test in 2 days...absoloutley furious!!! Thoughts guys? any help response much appreciated

Sounds like they are trying to scare you and position themselves to get out of a an costly warranty job. There are two things I will point out. I was told by a specialist VW mechanic that VW use a oil with a special coloured dye in it so that they can tell if you used a different oil so ask them for a free bottle of oil. After owning my twincharger for 12k now and 3 consumption tests later I would recommend checking the oil every 500km yourself and then telling them that you will be in there the next morning for a top up via email and copy VW in for there records. As said before by others I would not recommend being aggressive with your dealer. Just go with the flow and keep on their backs. This will give you the best results.

Took my GTI to Barloworld VW at Mascot to do an oil consumption test today.

When I picked the car up they said it had been leaking oil from the hose and they replaced the following parts under warranty

VW03C103474AD VENTHOSE
VW6R0129684E PIPE
VW03C103558AA VENTHOSE

They also did the VW "Peace of Mind" check and everything came up fine.

Hopefully this fixes my oil consumption issues??? For the first 27000km I never had a problem, but from there, I've been filling up a litre every 1500-2000km.

I definitely have the CAVE motor in my MY13, probably one of the last ones. Wish it was the CTHE in my car as that seems to be less prone to burning oil.
Thanks for the advice too Zakarados. I suspect it may need an engine rebuild but will keep you all posted. Then of course I have the dilemma of whether to keep the car or get rid of it.

Mine's MY13 with CAVE, had it replaced with another CAVE.

@Lemonskin, those are the parts from the crankcase ventilation mod TPI. Unless they actually found a split pipe to cause an oil leak I think they are using their smoke and mirrors trick again, most people are only getting marginal improvement from that TPI Mod.

Hmmm yeah I did get that feeling but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and see how it goes. A leak made sense seeing as I didn't have the problem for the first 27,000km but then have had to fill up 4 times in the next 6000km.

Im having pretty much the same problem im doing part 1 of the oil consumption test. Denlo vw asked that i dont fill any oil until the 1000km has been reached pretty scared the oil is going to get pretty low but i guess i will have to wait and see

I was doing the same test and my oil light came on today at about 600kms! I went straight in. Do not drive it to 1000kms no matter what they say. If your light comes on before 1000 then you obviously have an oil consumption problem and they will just move you onto the hose swap, and then you do another consumption test...

Interestingly I was topping up at about 1300, then 1600 (between fill up and light on) and yet during the consumption test it was 600.

Parts are ordered for my car, I will be having them fitted next week and will report later on what happens...

Weird thing is I went in for the oil consumption test but they didn't even do it, just replaced those parts.
