There's been an update (22 Jan 13) on erWin regarding high oil consumption. Not quite sure what, but it looks like they are replacing the Ventilation hose and now the connection pipe. Details below:

    Customer statement / workshop findings

    Customer statement:

    • The oil warning light is on

    • Increased oil consumption.

    Workshop findings:

    • The customer statement can be reproduced.

    • The oil consumption is above the manufacturer guidelines (more than 0.5 l per 1000 km).

    Technical background

    Production change

    Optimised hose for crankcase ventilation:

    • From engine number: CAV 438345

    Optimised air intake:

    • From engine number: CTH 023901

    Measure

    Check/repair:

To establish the actual oil consumption follow the instructions for the oil consumption measurement in the guided fault finding. The instructions are divided in "Start oil consumption measurement" and "Evaluate measurement" (after the test drive).

    • If the oil consumption is over 0.5l/1000km:

‒ Remove the crankcase ventilation hose according to the repair manual.

‒ Replace the crankcase ventilation hose (part number 03C 103 474 AD) according to the attached instructions.

‒ Replace the connection pipe between air intake and intake manifold (part number 6R0 129 684 E) according to the repair manual (illustration 1).

‒ Replace the ventilation hose for the air intake (part number 03C 103 558 AA) according to the repair manual (illustration 1).

    • Update the software of the engine control unit

So picked up my car today after the new DSG was installed and I had queried that my oil consumption hadn't decreased since having the breather pipe installed.

Written on the service receipt was that with it using still 1l per 2000kms that is within manufacturer guidelines and no action is to be taken.

They said if it increases (so lets hope it uses 1ml) then they'll have to think what the next course of action was. He then asked what oil I'm using (Liqui Moly Top Tech 4200) and suggested I swap from a 504 to a 507 approved oil as it's thicker and see how I go.

    So basically, apply a band-aid!

Umm... it would appear that the level of product knowledge within VW dealerships... is something that needs to be addressed...

There are specific combinations Volkswagen approve (e.g. 502.00/505.00, 503.00/506.00, 504.00/507.00, etc). They normally don't approve any lubricant unless it's dual rated (i.e. passes both petrol & diesel tests) or is an older specification. You will never find an approved lubricant on the market that only meets 504.00 but not 507.00, or vice versa.

To date, all approved 504/507 lubricants have a viscosity grade of 5W-30 - but if it was so 'thin', you'd think other TSI engines would experience the same level of oil consumption...

May I also remind everyone that it is acceptable* to use 502.00/505.00 lubricants (common) or 502.00/505.00/505.01 lubricants (a bit rarer), which come in a variety of viscosity grades (0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40, 5W-40, 10W-40).

*European market vehicles on variable intervals should revert to fixed intervals if using these lubricants.

Yes, it's akin to addressing the symptom rather than the problem - though that's not to say band-aids don't work...

Hate to be the guy who brings some good news to this thread but...

After having my oil drop to the ball on the dip stick @ 1700ks I topped it up with Castrol Edge (1ltr) and now at 5000ks it hasn't budged. The car has a shell helix sticker so im assuming thats what was used originally.

Polo GTI High Oil Usage - Discussion Thread

    Hey Pete,
just catching up on your DSG and oil issues, not at all good to hear you are still having oil consumption issues and that Burwin appear to be giving you the run around, I expected better from them (from my past dealings) - what is it with VW dealerships and servicing!

    What a load of malarky.

I'd suggest you try a different dealer & also relate your story to VW AUS.

Unfortunately brad, this was the one last hope for Melbournians. Until I find out who will be managing the new VW dealership in Ringwood there is now officially no good dealership service centers for passenger vehicles in Melbourne....

VAG care less than the dealers. With all my DSG issues they told me that it wasn't a 'major' failure with the vehicle so oil consumption they'll just fob off with the little clause in the manual.

It was funny when I was at Burwin yesterday some girl (in her 20s) was going NUTS at them. Her car had just come out of warranty and something bad went wrong and they were only going to approve 70% of the costs. I felt for her.
