Spot-on. No rev limiter will stop a downshift like that.

I'd love to know how and why, but as you can imagine, the customer wasn't very forthcoming with information.

This doesn't seem to be the case- read the threads on oil usage sticked on the top. Mine had oil consumption test around 8,000km, engine rebuild (approx 10,000 I think it was) and then engine replacement at 15,000km. I've lost count the amount of litres I've chucked in the car (and the dealer has put in as I go there for top ups after I use my litre bottle of oil) so mine was an excessive case but doesn't seem to be the only one on this forum.
