defo interested in your build of the CAI, if it does end up working great reckon i could buy one off you? the current prices for a CAI are ****ed
Guys,
Cant justify some of these prices for intakes....even this bad boy will be about $380 to fashion but figured I may be able to make a bit of a beast of an intake, something that'll not only sound fantastic but actually give a noticeable flow increase when it comes to tune time (paired with a 2.75 turbo back exhaust)
This is what I've sourced for a bit of a DIY, thoughts?
Going to sell the small blue pod ($10 anyone?) that comes with the china intake for the larger dual funnel.
It was either fashion something like this, or buy something engineered, but ridiculous at around $530 (like this) This is quite a beautiful intake, but would my build yield better results? much larger filter, not bottle necked in anyway by only pulling air from the small front grill, as a lot of these aftermarket kits do, they're both shielded quite well... if anything my filter will be further from the engine thus giving less chance of the carbon shield heating up?
Good idea or am I just being blinded by the $$ saving? It's not a huge amount but I'm always about savings with my builds

has it been proven the intake even helps? stock airboxes are often fine performance wise unless all you're chasing is sound
Those intake shrouds are actually pretty good - i used one for a semi custom intake on my old Golf R and then bought another one for a semi custom intake on my Mk6 GTI. They fit well - although i made an extra bracket for mine, look good and shield off the engine bay heat quite well.
I think your custom intake will work quite well on the 1.4 engine, and you will have the satisfaction of doing it yourself.
Heres my GTI:
And here is my R:

that looks so nice, you had videos of your induction noise a while back right?
I went through about 4-5 different intakes on my R to get one i really liked - i made a video of the VWRacing intake as that was the first intake i had, but all the other intakes i tried sounded pretty similar but perhaps not quite as loud as the VWRacing.
With the GTI, it still sounds really nice but is probably only 50-60% as loud as the R, no doubt the smaller turbo and less boost is the main reason for the reduction in sound (GTI runs about 18 PSI whereas the R ran about 27 PSI and a bigger turbo).
Great to know! In the process of buying the parts now this setup gives quite a beautiful supercharger note I've been told (real gruppeM setup) This is the beginning of what will be a stage 2 + build. Intake and exhaust will be integral
As you will note, most "name brand" intakes come out of factories in China, get a nice box and flash sticker, and the price quadruples. The only thing to be very aware of is the actual filter element. I'd happily get a china housing, pipes etc from a no name factory after a bit of research, but I'd buy a GENUINE filter here, as there are excellent looking K&N copies etc all over eBay, and at the end of the day the actual filtration is the critical point for your engine.
Also GruppeM is made by Simota Tiawan - nothing to do with the fake unapproved Simota Australia here, so if you write to them in Tiawan, they can sell you an unbranded Simota/GruppeM for a fraction the stickered cost. I've talked to them at length, would stock them if I went back to parts and I'll be putting a genuine Simota on my own car from them.

I wonder how this setup would go on the 6C.
All the parts have been ordered, will make a video of the finished product and sound. It'll be the down-pipe (de-cat) after this. The air filter is an over sized Tirol filter (can be oiled) with no end cap so looks like it'll give an extremely high amount of flow (if it fits, fingers crossed, it's quite long)
Parts total including shipping was bang on $370 so far cheaper than any pre built kit, and I do believe this setup will be much more beneficial than almost all/any pre engineered build.
A question one of you may know, the forge diverter valve (the engineered, non BOV FMFSITATfor these engines) and up-rated coil packs, is it worth it/needed before a custom tune? Or is it just the intake and down-pipe that are the real limiting factors?
