Don't ignore good advice! Asking people to tell you what you WANT to hear isn't going to help you in the long run. Most posts in this thread so far are from low mileage cars.

I get that you are excited about the prospect of the car. We were too and initially we loved it but that feeling is long gone.

If you are happy to be without your car for warranty repairs, happy to buy expensive oil to regularly top it up, happy to have the car shudder when you take off as the clutch slips away, happy to potentially end up with a bust engine that requires extremely expensive repairs after warranty then buy the GTI, ignore the good advice you have been given here.

Ours has been in 3 times for high oil consumption which they haven't fixed. It's been in twice for other issues including faulty sensors that resulted in loss of power. It's booked in next week for the clutch issue.

It pings under acceleration at times followed by a nice puff of smoke out the back. It is less than 2 years old.

I had a 118TSI, same motor and same gearbox and it had similar issues. I got rid of it quick smart.

You should be minimising your risk. Unless of course you are rich and don't mind wasting money.

I am trying to help you. Listen to the sound advise people are giving you on this forum. Go buy a Fiesta ST. It's newer and just as quick.

I'm well aware that the Gti has had a lot of problems but all new cars do.
First year Mazda 3's for instance have a really bad problem with rust which Mazda addressed about 2 years later.
What I'm getting at is these engines and gearboxes are used in huge amounts of cars around the globe and yes they have been very problematic, but VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda all must know that they can't just carry on selling bad engines/gearbox's, It would cost them millions in warranty repairs.
So perhaps the question I should be asking is, Have these problems been addressed in the newer models ie. Cthe engines new gearbox software etc?

to add to that the first was a my12.5 and i did 17,000kms of trouble free motoring, current one is a my13.5 and has had no problems in it's first 4,000kms (hasn't needed any oil top ups or anything), well neither of them did... yet...

About 7500km on my 2013 build GTI, no problems yet. Oil consumption is low, dsg is ok (seemed better before the recall tbh but it's still fine).

The majority of the haters on here absolutely love our cars too!

I just have moments where I wish it could be easier or regret taking a risk.

15 months and 23000km old here. I've had no problems other than a small amount of oil used in the first 10k. fantastic car for power/economy/comfort (wife drives mine 75% of the time though!)

the biggest issue i see with it is the resale value was hurt a bit by the issues. that and it seems that you get around 1 in 10 dealers who actually have a clue and are willing to help you and not be a pain!

Since I got my polo GTI back in 2012 October it was a great day I was happy butterfly's and I think a lot of people would of been getting there own . Now on the forum I've seen a lot of people having problems, issues, dramas .... With my polo GTI it's a great car I haven't had any issues
Just the oil and dsg sometimes but nothing major for myself to be like (Grrrr I hate this thing I want it gone) only reason I want it gone is cause I want more power . But if i got more i would be dead or no license ... But after I get some money I'll tune the polo and ill be as happy as I was when I got the car .

It's a hard decision to make picking the right car . But there not that bad in my eyes .. But I guess I've just been lucky.

I'm not on the forum due to issues, I'm on the forum as I love the VW's I own and have owned. For us it has been 2 out of 2 with issues with the engine and gearbox in these cars. Again I'll raise that the people saying they have no issues have all been low kilometre cars. The clutches slipping doesn't seem to start until the 30 -35K mark. It isn't until they become bad that they are noticed either as they degrade gradually so the driver becomes used to it and doesn't notice the change. I firmly believe that there are many of these cars driving around out there with this issue and the driver doesn't even realise. My partner thought the shuddering/slipping was normal!

If you read around you'll learn that the general consensus is that they run this engine too lean.

Personally I would be surprised if the problem has been addressed in the newer engines as it has been discussed that the design is flawed for our conditions here in Australia (poor fuel quality, temps etc). As for the gearbox, well there have been "new and improved" clutch packs etc but they still wear out. The dry clutch seems to just be a bad idea.

There are people on here that are on their 2nd and 3rd engine, 2nd and 3rd clutch packs. There are many more complaints about the twin charged engine and the 7spd DSG on this forum than anything else. That's not haters, that's just the facts.

The engine has been completely dropped from the Golf VII range. That speaks volumes to me.

I can assure you I'm not a hater. I love my R and I loved the 118TSI (such a comfortable car) and in the beginning I loved the Polo GTI. I still love the idea of it. Quick and great fuel economy!

But no amount of love pays for the potentially huge bills you may face in the future.

The Mrs hates her car and it's not even two years old yet.
