-pink is a yearly check for roadworthy they check lights, wipers and do a brake test as weel as other things

-Blue is a initial check for a can be re registered or transferring from another state checks roadworthy and vehicle details in a more detailed way then a pink

-Green slip is the 3rd party insurance so if you mow done 20 bystanders it covers there hospital bills. This is already included In the rego cost in other states.

And there there's the rego and road tax part which is only around the $200-$250 mark depending on car type.

I registered yesterday (8Jan13) my new Polo GTI in NSW which I purchased from an interstate dealer.

Some numbers to compare and ponder:

$1,419 at the RTA - Registration, Stamp Duty and Coloured Number Plates
$471 - NRMA Comprehensive car insurance
$503 - NRMA Green Slip (same as WRX last year)
    $50 - Blue Slip

Of course some of these I will be paying again and again every year ...

You'll be paying yearly for the coloured plates, your insurance (optional), and the Greenslip but you won't need to the car rego-inspected until it's 5y/o
As for a Greenslip costing the same as car x - this isn't unusual. Greenslips are mandatory - and as such, are calculated based on a number of set factors such as age and type of car, your accident history, age of vehicle, and number of accidents you've had.
In fact, if you use their calculator - the only question you're asked about the car itself is it's age - so your Polo GTI costs the same for you for a Greenslip as [insert expensive car name here].

Other insurance is based on a significant number of underwriting criteria which does factor in the car, and you should see variance between different makes and models, where you live, etc. some countries go as far as to use colour of the car as an underwriting criteria, and it could, for instance, be more expensive to insure a candy-white Polo GTI than a Royal Blue WRX

    Comprehensive $616 (NRMA)
Green Slip $526 (seems to have gone up heaps in the last few years...MCIS levy?)
    Rego $274

Then add in servicing, petrol, tolls, etc and it soon adds up.

Just dont get me started on electricity prices!

MCIS factors up to 39.5% of your Green Slip - depending on where you live
The Motor Accidents Authority have detailed why rates are increasing in 2013 - and that's mostly because insurers have cried foul over the claim increases, as well as their returns.

As for electricity, I blame the state government, AusGrid and IPART

No, $Zero annual fee for standard coloured plates.

Correct, cost changes with postcode and NRMA membership. MAA Premium Determination Guidelines provide basis for the premiums. Probably what mostly matters is did it cost the same or less than last year, in this case yes, albeit a different vehicle located at the same address.

some countries go as far as to use colour of the car as an underwriting criteria
Maybe so, but I am insuring my vehicle in NSW.

Where do you live & what's your excess?
Northern Sydney, excess $800. Original quote was $407 but I added one of the optional extras. My cover isn't the Comprehensive Plus product NRMA offers. A number of loyalty discounts and insured for market value; they replace a new car anyway. Premium difference between $800 and $650 excess is about $50 p.a., so I am taking a gamble that I will not make an at-fault claim in the next two years.

Cost for the Comprehensive insurance was one of the reasons I purchased the car.

Awesome, this looks to be a recent change, as when I looked into doing this in the past it did have a fee to it, which is why I went to NRL plates, as it was a higher initial cost, but the same annual cost. Ditto with my motorbike, I went with personalised plates as it was only a little more than coloured ones.

Really? I didnt know that. Oh well, mine are custom coloured and they only cost $99/year. Did you pay the $220 order fee?

Hmmm still surprising its that low but loyalty discounts must really add up! I didn't get any loyalty discount as I haven't registered a car for 4 years. But I went with the full comprehensive insurance with $650 excess (but stupidly not windscreen insurance )
